"Change Primary User" On Device in Intune is Greyed Out

I am an IT Administrator and have all the permissions to manage my businesses Microsoft 365 accounts including Intune. When trying to update and change to primary users for devices in Intune, it is greyed out and doesn't allow me to change it. I need to get this resolved so we can properly have all devices showing the correct users. How can I get this resolved? I've uploaded a screenshot to this message.

  • Hi, to fix the “Change primary user” button being grayed out in Intune, ensure the device is marked as “Corporate” (not BYOD), that it isn’t locked by an existing Autopilot assignment, and that you have the Intune Administrator role or a role with the right permissions (check scope tags). If the device is co-managed with SCCM, verify that Intune is set to manage user assignments. In some cases, you may need to remove the device from Intune (or reassign it in Autopilot) and re-enroll it.

    Hi Ricco,

just to understand the situation better, what your RBAC in Intune, do you have Intune Built-in Roles or do you have any GA or Device Administration Role from the Azure itself?

How are the devices joined in Intune? Are they Hybrid ones or pure EntraID joined?

Are the devices enrolled as Company (Enterprise) Devices or personal one?

I am an Administrator in Intune with full permissions. Same thing for Entra ID. This issue is only happening to the MAC devices. Windows devices allow me to up update the Primary User. The MAC devices have mostly an "Unknown" type but some say "Microsoft Entra Registered" but both registered types won't allow me to to update the Primary User. Most devices are enrolled under "Corporate". Have about 3 MACs that are personal. All of them regardless of corporate or personal will not give the option to update them.

We really need more information to determine why this may have happened, as there could be multiple possibilities. For example, are the devices Hybrid or Entra joined? You can read more here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/intune-service/remote-actions/find-primary-user#change-a-devices-primary-user

When I look at the join type, most of them say "Unknown" but there are a few that say "Microsoft Entra Registered". Both types don't give me the option to update the Primary User.

Only Entra Joined or Hybrid Joined devices can be update, not registered.  Are the devices PC's or MAC's?

I don't believe Mac devices can be updated.

I discovered that all of our MAC devices won't give me the option to update it, but the Windows devices do. Is it confirmed that all MAC devices don't give that option, or could that be a setting/policy issue?
