Mysterious icons/links on home screen
I don't know how to best desribe this issue. I leave computer on all night. In the morning, when I move the mouse to activate the screen, there is a large, 3-panel image with links to various websites. Today's panels are titled "Daily Wonder," "Hats Off to the Class of '25," and "Markets." A click on any of these panels takes me to a website. No idea how these panels are produced or by whom. If I try to take a screenshot, the images disappear and normal home screen is shown. I do not recognize anything in the Task Manager that might explain this. Perhaps another user can ask me questions that will lead to more information.
MaëlDec 31, 2025Copper Contributor24Views0likes1CommentI need help from Cliff S
I spent hours following the Sepember 4, 2022 post from Cliff S which showed over 250 system services configs one could Disable.. Following that I was able to Disable all the ones he suggested ( about 200 of them) and it reduced my boot up time on my Windows 11 from 29 seconds to 15 seconds. But, since his list was posted over two years ago I had lots of other services not listed because they did not exist back then. I am hoping he (or someone who can contact him) sees this message because I am further hoping he might post an updated list. That would allow me (and anyone else running Windows 11) with the opportunity to Disable other unnecessary services not listed back in September 2022.. I have a problem where the games keep scaling for some reason and I don't understand why. The resolution of the monitor and the resolution in the games are the same. So in theory it shouldn't be scaling, right? But every time I change adjust desktop size and position in NVCP the games are feels much different, so I think it's scaling. For example: if I'm use gpu scaling games are slower but if I'm use display scaling games feels faster. I can't write it more accurate, just feels like something is not okay. The reason I asked it because I have a couple of ideas what can cause it: -High-dpi override (I have a dell g2723H 27" 1920x1080) I know its not a high dpi monitor, but I got this idea from nvidia support. -Disable fullscreen optimization -Windows size is on default 100%. But once I tried custom size 100% and then games were again feels different. -Windows game mode -Monitor presents mode I know I have to try it myself and I will know, but I don't know how games should look if they don't scale and there's too many option that I have to try. Does anyone have any another idea what could be causing this? Most of the time I play rocket league, so that's why I can see it if the game is weird. Update: I tried disable fullscreen optimization and high dpi override. These didn't help.LouisianaBayouDec 31, 2025Iron Contributor107Views0likes1CommentWindows Action Center - what ID and password? How to set?
I just learned about the Windows Action Center, and I'm interested because of the feature to clone a VM. Clearly intended for IT professionals, but what the hey. I'm just Joe SixPack end-user. So I downloaded it OK,and installed but, but I could not log in, because I couldn't enter a successful combination of userID and password. Any advice would be appreciated. I have no problem with using the registry editor, and I'm OK with PowerShell.BeckettPhoenixDec 31, 2025Bronze Contributor38Views4likes1CommentIs file history a good backup option on Windows 11/10?
I have a Windows 10 PC and Windows 11 laptop. Currently, need some help for finding a straightforward way to backup my important documents and personal files on Windows 11/10. I see the built-in File History feature, which seems easy to set up to an external drive. But I'm not sure if it's a reliable and complete backup solution for my needs, or if I should be using something else. My primary goal is to have a reliable safety net against drive failure or accidental file deletion. Is File History a good backup option for this, or does it have major limitations I should know about? For example, does it properly backup files that are frequently in use or from applications? Any advice is appreciated. Should I stick with and trust File History, or should I pair it with a different system or use third-party backup software instead?DavidGarciaDec 31, 2025Iron Contributor26Views0likes6CommentsFrom Dev to Beta: windows-11-insider-preview-build-26220-7522
I am unable to switch from Dev to Beta. It is grey out. According to the Dec 19, 2025 article, Dev and Beta share the same build, with the option to switch between them. It is December 23, and the option is greyed out. Changing the Regedit key does not work. I do not want any part of Dev. I did not receive a warning to confirm the selection; it locked and greyed-out Beta. Please any guidance will help. I truly hope I dont have to reinstall on this computer. Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7523 (Dev & Beta Channels) | Windows Insider Blog Article in part: Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7523 (KB5072043) to the Dev & Beta Channels. As a reminder, we are offering the same builds to both the Dev & Beta Channels on Windows 11, version 25H2. If you are an Insider in the Dev Channel, you now have a window to switch from the Dev Channel to the Beta Channel if you would like. This window will only be open for as long as we’re releasing the same 25H2-based updates across both the Dev and Beta Channels. After we move Dev Channel forward to a higher build number, the opportunity to switch between these channels will close. When the Dev Channel jumps ahead, things might not be as stable as the Dev Channel is today, so we highly encourage you to evaluate which channel you would like to be in during the time in which the window to switch is open. Changes in Dev & Beta Channel builds and updates are documented in two buckets: new features, improvements, and fixes that are being gradually rolled out for Insiders who have turned on the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available (via Settings > Windows Update*) and then new features, improvements, and fixes rolling out to everyone in the Dev & Beta Channels. For more information, see the Reminders section at the bottom of this blog.55Views0likes1CommentWhat software for PC cleaning is really needed?
I'm from the era of Windows XP/7, where you had to have programs like Avast or something similar to keep your PC free of junk and running well. These days, I've been using Advanced Systemcare, I0bit Malware fighter, Smart Defrag, etc--more out of habit than anything, since that's what my uncle used. So, I ask: What software do I really need installed on my PC?KamrynimDec 31, 2025Iron Contributor75Views0likes3CommentsCamera app not wirking
