Announcing a Windows 10 deployment AMA on June 8th!
We are very excited to announce an upcoming opportunity to 'Ask Microsoft Anything' (AMA) about Windows 10 deployment! The AMA will take place on Thursday, June 8, 2017 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM Pacific Timein the Windows 10 deployment space. An AMA is a live online event similar to a "YamJam" on Yammer or an "Ask Me Anything" on Reddit. The Windows 10 deployment AMA will give you the opportunity to connect with members of the Windows product teams, who will be on hand to answer your questions and listen to feedback about application compatibility, Windows 10 deployment options, deployment best practices, and more. Don't miss this opportunity. Add the event to your calendar. We hope to see you there!Heather_PoulsenMay 08, 2017Community Manager8.4KViews14likes13CommentsIssue with date modified for NTUSER.DAT
Is Microsoft aware of an issue with various Windows 10 processes causing the date modified timestamp on the NTUSER.DAT file in unused profiles to change? We have specifically noticed that installation of cumulative updates modifies this file in all profiles, but there are other processes (I'm guessing scheduled tasks but I haven't found which ones) that do this too. This is particularly a problem in Education as we use the "Delete user profiles older than a specified number of days on a system restart" GPO setting to clean up old profiles on Lab and Classroom computers and that policy relies on the timestamp on the NTUSER.DAT file to determine the age of the profile. (The USMT tool also uses that file and timestamp when you specify to only capture profiles used within the last XX days.) For reference, the date modified timestamp on the profile folder in the Users directory does accurately reflect the last time the profile was used.SolvedJoe_FriedelAug 31, 2017Brass Contributor124KViews9likes54CommentsWelcome to the Windows 10 deployment AMA!
We will spend this hour discussing Windows 10 deployment scenarios, best practices, tips and tricks with the Windows product and engineering teams. Please submit each question by clicking "Start a new conversation" in this Windows 10 deployment group so we can easily identify and answer them. If you are looking for help with a specific issue, please visit the Windows IT Pro forums on TechNet. After the event, we will make a summary of the AMA and post it to the group. To get started, please introduce yourself as a reply below!Heather_PoulsenJun 08, 2017Community Manager13KViews6likes17CommentsThe Real Enterprise
When will Microsoft remove the bloat (Minecraft, Xbox, Candy Crush etc.) from the Windows Enterprise SKU? An approach like this is a real value proposition to organisations as every time we look to upgrade to a new version of Windows, many a hour is spent cleaning up this bloat through customisation.Dan Van DrunenJun 08, 2017Brass Contributor1.2KViews5likes0CommentsWindows AutoPilot: An introduction
If you haven't checked it out yet, Windows AutoPilot enables you to set up and pre-configure new Windows 10 devices for your organization, right out of the box, without imaging, with no infrastructure to manage. It can also be used to easily reset, repurpose and recover existing devices. The best part? Your users can go through the process independently, without making any decisions and without needing to involve IT. Want to learn more? Read Modernizing Windows deployment with Windows AutoPilot, watch the short technical walkthrough below, and register for the webcast and live Q&A on Thursday, July 27th. https://youtu.be/4K4hC5NchbEHeather_PoulsenJul 14, 2017Community Manager11KViews3likes17CommentsGroup Policy settings to specify default Windows Store Apps?
Any plans for this? It'd be nice to get away from removing these with a script during the image process. For those that weren't removed, it makes it difficult after the fact. I'd like to specify which default ones are allowed and which aren't (Weather vs. Candy Crush).Adam JuelichJun 08, 2017Copper Contributor2.5KViews3likes1CommentWhen replacing PCs, how are you migrating files and settings from old to new PCs?
Trying to get a feel for what people are using for migrating the file contents from users' old PCs to their new PCs in large scale deployments (can be to Windows 10 or other versions). What do you do now? 1. Use ConfigMgr OSD and its built-in USMT integration. 2. Use MDT with USMT 3. Use USMT standalone 4. Use PCMover 5. I've built a copy script 6. My users are expected to migrate their own data 7. Everyone is on OneDrive, Box, or Dropbox, so everything they want to keep is already in the cloudJeremyChapmanMSFTMay 30, 2018Microsoft3.5KViews3likes16CommentsWindows 10 2004 Update and Setup School PC Provisioning Package Fails
We have been using a bootable USB stick with Windows 10 1909 (Media Creation Tool) and provisioning packages created with the Setup School PC app to join several hundred devices to our Azure AD and Intune. I downloaded and ran the Media Creation Tool to create a Windows 10 2004 bootable USB stick. I also created a new provisioning package in Setup School PC as well as used existing known good provisioning packages. I boot the device with the 2004 USB stick and install a clean install of Windows 10. After the device reboots, I get prompted to select the provisioning package the Windows setup detects on the USB drive. After a few seconds, it says "Setup completed with errors" with 'Apply policies' highlighted in yellow text. The only options are Reset PC or Try Again. This same device does work using a Windows 10 1909 bootable USB stick. Is this a bug or where can I go to troubleshoot this? Fortunately we kept our 1909 bootable USB sticks so we can still setup devices. I've attached a screenshot of the error.SolvedMDSD421Jun 03, 2020Copper Contributor17KViews3likes42CommentsWill there be a Windows 10 ADK for 1909?
