Microsoft Defender for Office 365 (MDO) requires shared mailboxes to be licensed but doesn’t extend the same requirement to Microsoft 365 Groups. Given that Microsoft 365 Groups have group mailboxes and can function very much like shared mailboxes, the difference in licensing is remarkable. Why does this happen? It could be due to internal Microsoft politics, omissions, or just a preference for Groups. Who knows? https://office365itpros.com/2025/08/18/microsoft-defender-for-office-365-2/61Views1like0CommentsCreating Dynamic Microsoft 365 Groups without Entra P1 Licenses
Dynamic Microsoft 365 Groups come with many advantages, but they also require Entra P1 licenses. This article explores how to create and maintain a DIY version of dynamic Microsoft 365 groups using the Microsoft Graph PowerShell SDK and Azure Automation. At the end of the day, the principle is proven, but maybe it's best to pay for the licenses. https://practical365.com/diy-dynamic-microsoft-365-group/26Views1like0CommentsChildren associated with some random Family Group and can't be removed
Hi, My daughters laptop was becoming pretty much unusable so I formatted it over the weekend. When connecting it back to her Microsoft account, I then learnt that she was part of some Family Group associated with an Organizer that I have no idea where it has come from, it's some random gmail.com account and name I've never seen, and to make things worse it seems my son is also in this group. Because they are children, they can not click on anything that allows them to remove themselves from the family group. I then escalated a case to Microsoft (1028218745) and was informed there is literally no way to manually remove my childrens account from some foreign family group, and the actual recommendation from a supervisor that they close their account and create a new one. Now I understand the security conundrum here, that the whole idea of a Family Account is that children can't remove themselves from it. But this also introduces a pretty major security issue that any malicious person out there could request kids join a random family group and if the kids were to accept the request to join, then there are pretty much stuck there for good. Surely there is a way to address this? The Office365 support stuck to the script and pretty much said can't do anything manually at all. Things can always be done manually, its a matter of whether people are willing to do so, and at this time I can't find anyone in Microsoft who is willing to do it. In my organization, we are currently on the O365 E5 License with default 100GB mailbox size per user and 1.5TB archive quota. However, due to organizational policy and regulatory requirements, we are expected to keep all the data from inception. Hence, the requirement for a solution to extend our archive size from 1.5TB. From the official Microsoft documentation, https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/servicedescriptions/exchange-online-archiving-service-description/exchange-online-archiving-service-description#archive-storage-quota the maximum expansion of the archive mailbox is 1.5TB. Is it possible to extend the archive storage to an Azure blob? Like an automated script that moves the data from the Archive mailbox for each user to the Azure blob or any other storage service that does not have storage size limitation. I am open to suggestions. Thanks158Views1like2CommentsHow to Remove Members from Microsoft 365 Groups with PowerShell
After writing about how to copy group memberships from one user to another, the question arises about removing members from groups. The answer is straightforward when dealing with members of distribution lists and mail-enabled security groups, but things become more complicated when working with Microsoft 365 groups and it’s important to handle group owners correctly. https://office365itpros.com/2025/07/23/removing-members-from-groups/108Views0likes2CommentsAdding Outlook add-ins and permissions
Wonderoig if someone can answer a question for me. I'll use the process in this link as context https://help.draftable.com/hc/en-us/articles/46382047949977-Configuring-Redline-in-Email-Outlook-with-Draftable In short when adding an Outlook Addin and selecting a group to assign the add-in too and the accepting the permission requests does this: Apply the permissions to ONLY those nominated users' mailboxes; or Applies the permissions to ALL mailboxes and applies "security" by limiting the users who can see the add-in I assume it does one of the two. Any ideas?86Views0likes2Comments
