Win 11 Snipping tool issues
Hello.
Came from Win 7 to Win 11 and noticed how much less user friendly the Snipping Tool is compared to the old counterpart.
1. Biggest issue - On high resolution displays (3K+) it does not scale the pasted image to same size. Thus, if I drag and snip something in the view, and paste that image to an email for example, the result is huge in size compared to what it was snipped. Example at the end of this post (snipped this text and pasted it into email.. it stretches all over the screen at full resolution). Display resolution is 3200x2000 with 200% scaling. Everything else looks and sizes normally, only the snipping tool pasted images go totally whack.
2. When clicking on the Snipping Tool icon (keeping mine on the taskbar), why doesn't it go into snipping mode right away? Instead have to make another click to 'New' in order to start the action. In Windows 7 it started the snipping action immediately with no extra click necessary.
3. After dragging over an area to snip and let go of mouse button.. why doesn't it bring up the snipped image? Instead it stays in the background and now have to click on the icon again in order to see it to make markings on it with a pen, or to hit save, etc.
If you are trying to save a click here by copying it to the clipboard for immediate pasting, why not save a click when starting up the whole thing?
4. After the snip is taken, and brought to view in the tool, it is too small. In order to see anything inside the tool window, one must first drag the window bigger, to actually see the image in order to make any edits on it.
So many things about it seem totally backwards and take way longer to be actually useful. Make it behave like it was in Windows 7, which is actually useful and speeds up process. In Win 11 it's all upside down.
Pasted image sample, issue with the scaling:

I have the same complaint. It feels like a "downgrade" in some ways with this new Win 11 snipping tool.
When I do a screenshot the image is VERY small after a screen capture, if I captured an area of my screen using my 4k monitor.
I now have to "resize" the window afterwards in order to read it.
Please allow the win 11 version of this to at least have a setting to allow the user to change this default behavior to default to the 100% scaled size of the image that was snipped afterwards.
It actually scales it DOWN which makes the snipped image unreadable without a lot of extra clicks and resizing the window. - FredSwimsCopper Contributor
This might be a duplicate:
Problems with the new snipping tool app.
When I summon the snipping tool using the shortcut win+shift+S - the app's icon briefly appears in the taskbar, then it faults, and errors are written to the Event Log; the mini menu never appears at the top of the screen. Please see details in the attachment.
If I invoke the snipping tool from the Start button or the Run box the full app appears. I can Open a screenshot. All the new features work: click to Do, squaring up a hand drawn box or circle, etc. But if I click on the NEW button the app faults. I can invoke the app with Explorer by selecting a file and using Open With.
When I change MS-SCREENCLIP to Screen Snipping and use the shortcut key the old mini menu appears. I can take a snip. A toast notification pops-up. If I click it the new snipping tool app is invoked and functional with the exception of the NEW button which if selected causes a fault.
I have uninstalled/reinstalled via the Store, via PWSH. Check all the components using sfc /scannow.
Wondering if anybody else encountered this problem.I have reported the problem with the Feedback Hub app https://aka.ms/AAwaket

Windows 11 24H2
2025-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for arm64-based Systems (KB5063060)CoPilot+ PC Samsung Book4 Edge.
The new snipping tool app was working perfectly. Then something changed. When I invoke it with Windows+Shift+S (or R) the snipping tool app icon briefly is shown in the taskbar and then disappears. The mini-menu is not displayed at the top of the screen and it Faults. An two entries are written to the Event Log;

Here is the best part. If I change the app default
"Snipping Tool" (URL:ms-screenclip) to "Screen Snipping" and invoke with the shortcut keys Window+Shift+S, the old mini menu appears at the top of the screen and I can take a screenshot. After that I get a notification. If I click on the notification the new version of the snipping tool comes to the foreground and all the functions (with the exception of NEW) work perfectly, including the new features like "click to do", drawing a rectangle by hand and having it automatically square-up. Settings indicates it is the correct version. Also, using 'explorer' I can locate the snip and "open with snipping tool" and the new version appears. I can invoke it from the Start Key.
Crazy, right? Before you say it is an ARM64 problem, my wife has a CoPilot+PC ARM64 Lenovo Yoga and it works perfectly.
I have repaired, reset, deleted, re-installed from the store, uninstalled/reinstalled via PWSH, sfc /scannow ...
The attachment goes into a lot more detail. Yes, I reported it in the Feedback Hub app numerous times. My system is being monitored: all the fault events are going to Microsoft. I was hoping the Tuesday Cumulative update would fix it.There is something in the process of launching the mini-menu that is causing a Fault.
Is anybody else experiencing this problem?
Thank you.

When you snip, the image is copied to clipboard immediately, and you can paste directly into your email or document without opening the Snipping Tool window. The Windows 11 snipping overlay automatically copies to clipboard, so you can paste immediately.

Yes, but that is not my only use of Snipping Tool. When I see something like a numbers or text in graphic form on a site, and I have my mail and other windows open, I need my Snip to remain visible on the small screen desktop while I type it into my email in text. I don't want to paste it, I want text not graphic.
In Windows 10 when MS had both Snipping Tool & Snip and Sketch, I immediately gave up on Snip and Sketch in frustration when its window would not stay open while I used another window.

Press Win + Shift + S directly to start a snip immediately, bypassing the icon click. This is the quickest way to initiate a snip.
- SlantCutCopper ContributorPress Win + Shift + S to start snipping immediately. This keyboard shortcut is available in Windows 11 and will open the Snipping Tool directly.

HarriK reviving your post, I have the exact same 4 issues as yourself, May 2024 they are still a problem.
My main one is #1 the scaling when pasting into an email, it's huge and has to be resized every time, and #4 which are both related to the 3k screen I have on my laptop.
Was a solution ever found? I can;t seem to see many other posts like your in forums that offer any solutions.

I have tried desperately to copy the old Snipping Tool (which used to reside in windows\system32) from both a Windows 8.1 computer and a Windows 10 computer onto a bloatware Windows 11 computer (which no longer has snipping tool in system32), but the file(s) will not execute. Can anyone figure out how to get rid of Snip and Sketch🤬 and replace it with the old Snipping Tool?
I don't care about editing; I paste into MS Paint for that.
