Re: How to convert from a GoDaddy Office 365 Email Essentials account to a full M365 Business Standard?
You're spot on — GoDaddy’s Microsoft 365 setup is technically a Microsoft tenant, but it’s managed through GoDaddy’s federation, which limits admin access, available features, and support for advanced configurations. The good news: You don’t need to migrate in the traditional sense (no PST exports or tenant-to-tenant moves). Instead, your client can go through a process called defederation. This allows you to: Purchase Microsoft 365 Business Standard licenses directly from Microsoft Remove GoDaddy’s federation and delegated admin control Update DNS records Keep all data, users, and services intact with no downtime Once done, the tenant becomes fully native and is managed directly in the Microsoft 365 admin center — no more GoDaddy limitations. We’ve handled this process for clients in similar situations and documented it here if it helps: ▶️ Video walkthrough 📝 Step-by-step blog 🔗 Connect on LinkedIn Let me know if you need a quick checklist or run into any snags — happy to share what’s worked for us. Hi Jebb, Great question .... and a common one when it comes to GoDaddy and Microsoft 365 setups. When you purchase Microsoft 365 Business Premium through GoDaddy, you're technically getting Microsoft 365 services, but with limited admin access and some restrictions compared to buying directly from Microsoft. Here’s how it breaks down: Microsoft 365 Services You get access to core Microsoft 365 apps like Outlook, Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, etc. But the environment is managed under GoDaddy’s federation, so advanced admin features are restricted unless you remove GoDaddy’s control. GoDaddy Hosting Their web hosting is completely separate from Microsoft 365 services. You can host websites there, but it doesn’t integrate directly with SharePoint or any other M365 app. There’s no automatic way to link www.domain.com or blog.domain.com to Microsoft 365 tools. Subdomain Routing You can point subdomains (like blog.domain.com) to different hosted services ... but that’s handled through DNS, and won’t connect directly to M365 apps unless you build something custom. As for discounts on hosting, it varies depending on GoDaddy’s offers and isn’t directly tied to your M365 subscription. If you're running into limitations or want more control, there’s also an option to defederate your Microsoft 365 tenant from GoDaddy — without needing to migrate or lose data. You keep your domain, users, and setup, but gain full Microsoft admin access. Here’s a quick guide if you're exploring that path: ▶️ Video walkthrough 📝 Step-by-step blog 🔗 Connect on LinkedIn Hope this helps clarify things. Hello, I'm sorry to hear that you've been locked out of your tenant due to MFA. Based on my experience as a Microsoft Data Protection Engineer, I can assure you that this issue can be resolved through Microsoft Support, as they have the ability to reset MFA settings for you. If you're the sole Global Administrator for the tenant, you'll need to contact Microsoft Support directly via their hotline. They can initiate a support ticket on your behalf and escalate the case to the Data Protection team for resolution. Hi Tizard_Bates , I recorded a quick video that walks through your exact situation. If you’re the only global admin and locked out, unfortunately the only way forward is to reach out to Microsoft Support ... either by having someone with an active Microsoft 365 account open a ticket on your behalf (with your contact details) or by calling Microsoft support directly. They’ll escalate to the Data Protection Team, who will verify your identity and help you regain access. In the video, I also show how to set up a free backup admin account so this situation doesn’t happen again in the future. 🎥 Here’s the video: https://youtu.be/K1-p7DsZfjc Hope this helps and wishing you a quick resolution. Hi Steve, I’m sorry to hear you’re having such a difficult time getting your case escalated. I can help troubleshoot the issue with you and possibly find a faster resolution. Could you please share more details about the specific problem you are facing with your Office 365 account? For example: - Which service is affected (email, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, etc.) - Any error messages or codes you are seeing - What steps you’ve already tried With that information, I can suggest targeted fixes, walk you through PowerShell commands if needed, or help prepare the exact technical details you can give to Microsoft to get past the automation wall. Hi Kris You can definitely move back to the basic mailboxes and still keep your domain. The key is to first migrate and back up your data, then release the domain from Microsoft 365 before Combell can reconfigure it. High-Level Steps Identify and Back Up Data List all mailboxes and shared mailboxes Back up emails, OneDrive, and any other data Prepare Domain for Removal in Microsoft 365 Change all accounts to the .onmicrosoft.com address Remove the custom domain from all services and groups Remove Domain from Microsoft 365 Tenant Use the Admin Center to detach the domain once it’s no longer in use Update DNS to Point Back to Combell / or wherever you want Remove Microsoft 365 DNS records Add Combell’s basic email DNS records Restore Data and Test Import backed-up emails into Combell mailboxes Confirm email flow and access Once the domain is fully removed from Microsoft 365 and DNS is updated, Combell can activate your basic mail service again.
