Unable to Update Profile Picture

Copper Contributor

I am trying to update (i.e. change my existing) profile picture in Microsoft Teams.  I'm speaking about my personal picture, not the team picture.

I have tried every possible thing I can think to try to get this to work, and nothing works:

  • I tried PNGs, JPGs, and JPEGs
  • I tried a variety of sizes: 60x60 px, 100x100 px, 256x256 px, 512x512 px, with many other options as well.
  • I tried using the Teams desktop app, the web browser app, the iPhone app, the iPad app.
  • Within the web browser app, I have tried with Chrome and with Firefox.
  • I have also tried updating my profile name at the same time, which I saw recommended in one community answer.

All of this fails to work.

Whenever I try with the desktop or web app, I get the error "There was a problem saving the photo. Please try again."  Whenever I try with the iOS apps, I get the error "Error: We were unable to upload your image."  Obviously neither is helpful to understand what I should do to fix.

I've also encountered the exact same error if I merely try to remove the existing profile picture I have and go back to the generic colored text avatars (i.e. "There was a problem saving the photo ...").  Since I have a profile picture obviously this worked somehow before, but seems impossible to change now.

I am on a free version of Microsoft Teams, which (to my knowledge) is not linked to a larger Office365 account.

Please help!

Ok got it

Assuming you signed up with a Microsoft Account (I.e. outlook.com) update the photo here

https://account.microsoft.com/profile/

Assuming it was Free Teams it should pull through to your Teams profile. Just tested and works without issue

Let me know how you get on

@Christopher Hoard   Thanks for the quick reply Chris.

Unfortunately I had already done that as well.  I switched the microsoft account the new profile picture I want last week, but Teams still shows the old picture.  Maybe if I could delete my current Teams profile picture it'd pull the microsoft picture, but right now they are not in sync.  But it is the same login for both.

Ok, try this

Change it here again

https://account.microsoft.com/profile/

Then log out of Teams completely. Then flush your browser history. Also flush the Teams cache per this article

https://commsverse.blog/2018/09/28/clear-the-microsoft-teams-client-cache/

Let me know how that goes

@Christopher Hoard  Thanks for sticking with me on this.

Awesome idea, unfortunately does not appear to have solved the problem.  Pretty sure I cleared the cache correctly - though I'm on a mac so folder names slightly different, but close enough.  When I reopened both the desktop app and web app, the old picture still appears and I still can neither delete it nor upload new.

Ok,

I would try this.

1.) Change the picture in https://account.microsoft.com/profile/
2.) Change the picture in https://portal.azure.com. Go to Azure Active Directory > Users > Select User > Edit > Change Picture
3.) Wait 24 hours

It's definitely the microsoft account which changes it - Outlook has changed, OneDrive has changed but Teams hasn't updated for me either so I would say it's propagation time as the reason it hasn't changed. I am going to check back on mine tomorrow

@Christopher Hoard

The Azure approach looks extremely promising!  Following the steps you mention in Azure, my Azure avatar was the same (old) picture used in Teams, not the new picture I already fixed for my microsoft account.  I was able to successfully delete that from Azure and replace it with the new one.  So now Azure now correctly reflects that new avatar!  Still has not propagated to MS Teams, but I will give it 24 hours like you said.  I will update if/when the new picture is updated in Teams.

Thanks so much!

@Christopher Hoard

UPDATE: So it has basically worked.  On the Teams web app and on my iPhone app, it has fully worked.

But on the desktop app, it's being frustratingly random.  Sometimes it's the old, sometimes the new.  I'll click into one channel and see the new picture, go to another channel then come back and the old picture is back.  I'll make a post, it'll update to the new.  Randomly later it's back to the old.  No identifiable pattern.  I'm guessing it's just cached the old picture, but I've cleared the cache multiple times, even done a full uninstall & reinstall.  So I don't get it.  Maybe with more time all that cached items will get cleared away?  Any other ideas?

Even if not, seriously thanks for your help to this point!  Was going insane hitting brick wall after brick wall.

Final update:  It has worked across all instances of Teams and I no longer see any traces of the old profile picture.  I took no further action but just waited a few extra days for the new picture to propagate everywhere and for cache to naturally clear.  A bit odd that it took so long and manual cache clearing seemed to do nothing, but going through Azure was the solution I was looking for after much frustration trying within Teams.

Thank you @Christopher Hoard !

I have the same issue however when i go to Azure AD to change the photo, the option to change is grayed out. I have full administrator permissions. Can you suggest something?

@dpbasha So the "Select a file" field and the folder icon next to it are disabled?  And this was after you opened the profile and hit "Edit" on the top?

Here's the steps I followed.  If you have admin rights I don't get why this wouldn't work for you.

  1. https://portal.azure.com
  2. Menu icon in top left
  3. "Azure Active Directory"
  4. "Users" (in menu on left)
  5. Click user from list
  6. "Edit" button at top of page
  7. "Select a file" field
  8. Pick photo
  9. "Save" button at top of page

@jimmai

Thanks for responding!

Yes, those are the steps I am using and I have also attached another screen shot for your review.

This worked for me, thank you Chris!
