Hi, I'm hoping somebody can help what I believe to be a simple question. I currently have a Microsoft Office 365 Home subscription and are using Teams Free. I want to be able to chat, with an external company that I am working with while working from home. I'm currently between jobs. How can I either upgrade so I can chat or it there an easier option? The strange thing is that I have been able to chat with my wife who works for the old company I used to work for (its a long story)....

Help, please.

  • Or as you said, you can follow the Upgrade method in the menu with your photo in free teams to create a paid Teams tenant but this will be a new setup you won't be able to convert your Home tenant over. So your best bet might be the guest tenant switch and chat per previous reply.

A tip if you are able to be invited is to run the browser version of Teams and switch to that tenant in the browser tab and you will be able to keep your home tenant on the desktop client. This is assuming you still have messages and reasons to be in your home tenant. If not you can just switch in the client :p.

Thank you so much ChrisWebbTech for your responses. I have looked at the upgrade option as I would like to get all the benefits of a full version of Teams however when I click on the avatar in the top right of the desktop client I am using on my mac, there isn't an option to upgrade!! (screen grab attached)

      • Odd, maybe Mac client doesn't have support for it. Can you use Chrome and check teams.microsoft.com via web client and see if it's there?
  • You won't be able to directly chat (External chat) with another company. As Free Teams to Paid Teams link is not there. However, what you can do is get invited to a Team at the other company and once you are a guest. You will be able to use e-mail address of anyone in the company and then chat with them when you are switched to that tenant (upper right corner drop down that appears after accepting a guest invite).

Have you tried something like this:

    • Be on the Chat Panel of your Teams client
    • Click on Contacts
    • Click "Add a contact to this group" then add the email address of someone at this company.
    • Send this contact a text
    • Reach out to this person another way (your phone?) to see if they received your Teams text.

If so, what exactly was the result?
