Document Library Not Syncing To File Explorer With Columns That Are Required

Copper Contributor

Is anyone else getting the error "This site is read-only. You can't make any changes to files or folders on this site." I receive this error through the One Drive app when syncing down a SharePoint document library with columns that are required. I also did remove those columns to have required values (still kept them on the DL - I understand they don't display in the file explorer) and attempted to re-sync and synced the library and did so without issue. Another facet of this error - the Document Library on SharePoint Online with columns as required; if I were to drag and drop from the file explorer, the Document Library will know if there are required fields and prompt me by revealing the right side pane and fill that information in before adding it to the library. I have attached that screenshot as well.

The sync issue is well known and not still fixed by Microsoft in the Sync client: when you sync documents with mandatory columns, files are synchronized in read only mode. In regards of Drag & Drop, this is currently by design...Microsoft has decided that it's not required to ask for metadata when uploading documents to a doc. library
Thank you! This has caused me pain for so long without finding an answer. I made the column optional and I can now edit on all machines where I synced.
If only the error message explained why it was read-only...

So, you're telling me that if we have required metadata columns, we can only sync through File Explorer/ as "read only?"

...Is there any work-around? (without making the metadata fields "optional")

Ugh, that's really bad. Hoping we can find a "fix" to this

Has there been a fix supplied yet?

Thank you for this. I have changed the document library so the columns I previously had as required aren't any longer, but it still copies them over as read only. Any suggestions? Help!
