Welcome to the Delivery Optimization & Connected Cache AMA. Let's get started! Post your questions in the Comments. We will be answering questions in the live stream—and others will be answering here in the chat.
- KoflTBrass ContributorWhen does standalone MCC come out of private preview? And why not deliver it with the Intune "core" license and instead requiring E3 or oother license "voodoo" A showstopper for non-proftits with E1.
- lalanc01Iron ContributorFrom your experiences using connected cache and DO, do you see clients using more the connected cache over peers or they evenly use both? thks
- amyzhouFormer EmployeeThanks for the question! Answering again in text in case people come across this page with the same question. DO and Connected Cache were designed to work together (not one over the other). Thus, most of our customers choose to use both technologies - we handle it on the back end in terms of balancing where your devices get their downloads from. We optimize for the best download experience - essentially, when your device requests a download, it will receive it from whichever is fastest to respond. That being said, there are ways to configure how much you use the MCC vs DO if that's something you'd like to customize.
- RainerP250458Iron Contributor" That being said, there are ways to configure how much you use the MCC vs DO if that's something you'd like to customize." would like to customize exactly that behaviour: HOWTO?
- lalanc01Iron ContributorIs there a way to force/prioritize clients to use connected cache over peers for getting content so that it acts like a distribution point for DO content? thks
- PhilWilcockCopper Contributoryep - you can set the Download mode to 0 i.e no peering OR if you just want to prioritize MCC but still have some P2P you have to use the Fallback policies
- clckr24Copper ContributorMy director says he had problems with Delivery Optimization in the past and has had it turned off in GPO. Would you be able to provide reasons why we need to turn it back on? Also, best practices so it doesn't overwhelm certain machines (like executives)?

If you are pulling updates directly from the internet, you will want to enable DO's P2P to reduce the bandwidth usage on your network. Participating in P2P (as a "seed" or an "uploader") should not overwhelm the device. It is typically the download side that is noticeable and that can happen if a device is downloading too fast. If you have sites with low bandwidth it is recommended to set bandwidth throttling policies (whether or not you are using P2P).

If I add Microsoft Connected Cache to an already in-place distribution point at a location, will all of the content for autopilot be able to be delivered from there (for devices at that location) or will some of it still need to be downloaded over the internet? If I add a task sequence as a step in Autopilot would the content for the sccm-based applications in that task sequence also be on the MCC?

All Intune managed / "Cloud" content (such as Store app updates, M365 app updates, Windows updates, Drivers, etc) can be delivered from Microsoft Connected Cache that's installed on your distribution point. ConfigMgr content however won't be using MCC. For the complete list of supported content please visit: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/do/waas-delivery-optimization#types-of-download-content-supported-by-delivery-optimization). - Seb_59510Copper ContributorHello, any updates about standalone MCC ?
- amyzhouFormer EmployeeHi Sebastien, yes! MCC for Enterprise/Education (standalone) is now in private preview - we have more than 50 active customers as of now. If you are interested in testing it out for yourself, fill out this survey here: https://aka.ms/MSConnectedCacheSignup and you'll hear back from us!

I just asked the following question in https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-events/when-is-my-device-going-to-update/ec-p/3660349#M1717 and got asked to post it here: How safe is delivery optimization. Specifically, where devices are allowed to pull updates from nearby devices. We have a security auditing company that is telling us to turn it off because devices could potentially get harmful/manipulated updates from devices in an unsafe environment.
AriaUpdated? Or anyone else 😉
Edit (reply to Carmen):
Hi Carmen. The question we got asked was, what happens when the device is on an open WiFi or home WiFi with other Windows 10/11 devices? Will the device use peer to peer from those devices and how safe is it?

Hi Rob, Thanks for the question. You can be certain that Delivery Optimization is extremely safe to use within your organization and we strongly discourage you from turning it off. It might help to provide an overview of what happens when Delivery Optimization's peer-to-peer requests a download. I think you'll find this information useful, https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/do/delivery-optimization-workflow. Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions once you've looked through that information. We are here to help!- Rob de RoosIron ContributorHi Carmen, The question we got asked was, what happens when the device is on an open WiFi or home WiFi with other Windows 10/11 devices?
