SharePoint Server Subscription Edition AMA
Event details
We are very excited to announce a SharePoint Server Subscription Edition AMA!
An AMA is a live text-based online event similar to a “YamJam” on Yammer or an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit. This AMA gives you the opportunity to connect with Microsoft product experts who will be on hand to answer your questions and listen to feedback.
Feel free to post your questions about SharePoint Server Subscription Edition anytime in the comments below beforehand, if it fits your schedule or time zone better, though questions will not be answered until the live hour.

- Giles HamsonCopper ContributorRegarding licensing... Is Subscription Edition licensed through the standard methods or is there a link to Office 365 license. For example. If a user has an E3 / F3 Microsoft 365 license, they also have a CAL for Subscription Edition?
- TroyStarr
Microsoft
Hi Giles, SharePoint Server Subscription Edition still follows the server/CAL model, but those licenses require Software Assurance. Microsoft doesn't offer perpetual licenses for SharePoint Server Subscription Edition like we did for the previous versions of SharePoint Server. If a Microsoft 365 license includes downgrade rights to be used with SharePoint Server, then that license can be used with SharePoint Server Subscription Edition. If you let your Microsoft 365 license or your Software Assurance contact expire, then you no longer have the right to use SharePoint Server Subscription Edition. - mikeleemsft

On SharePoint Online sites it is sometimes required to change the text of the Office Suite bar, how can I achieve this?

Hi Victor, It is a new feature request to SPO. Would you mind opening a DCR (Design change request) support ticket to SPO. We will be able to follow up with you regarding this feature request. Thanks Steve - Aria_ConsultingBrass ContributorI've never found a way to change that short of a customization.
- Aria_ConsultingBrass ContributorJust tried joining the live event, but apparently something was wrong with the calendar file as I was alone on the Teams event even though the info above says 08:00 AM - 09:00 AM (PDT) which would make it 0:00 AM - 10:00 AM (MDT) which is my time zone.
- JuliaThompsonCopper Contributorthis is a "ask anything" session; no video
- Aria_ConsultingBrass ContributorSo why did the meeting invite have a Teams link??
- AdriennePCopper ContributorOur company is transitioning to Office 365 and users who have already experienced this transition have lost the ability to drag and drop files from File Explorer to/from SharePoint. Will this functionality be restored for Office 365 users? Please?? We have several different sites for different groups and this is a feature we use regularly for multiple documents.
- JuliaThompsonCopper ContributorI guess you can still use the upload process...?
- AdriennePCopper ContributorWhich is very time consuming when transferring files from one SP site to another. We set the system up like it is because the D&D functionality made the process smooth. Without it, it is cumbersome, and I can see us just going back to our shared drive. Upgrades should improve functionality, not make it harder.
- bruttiumCopper ContributorHi. I'm just a fellow user here...But what browser are they using? When using Edge or Chrome I am not experiencing a problem with dragging a new file into a library. All I can imagine at this point is that it's an outdated browser or perhaps some sort of web-part issue (in which case, try dragging a file directly to a library and see if it works, rather than dragging to the web-part.)
- AdriennePCopper ContributorWe have tried it with Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and IE. SharePoint 2019, with Outlook 365. Drag and Drop isn't working even though it appears the settings should allow it.
- Hello, how can I reduce the 1TB OneDrive Microsoft 365 subscriptions space, in 200GB, and reuse all the 800GB of each account, adding them to 1TB Sharepoint space of the tenant? Thanks!
- Aria_ConsultingBrass ContributorODB storage doesn't get reallocated to SPO storage.
- mrosenstein_11950Copper ContributorCertain features are greyed out if I use Edge Browser, but are accessible via Internet Explorer. Does Central Admin require backwards compatibility mode?
- TroyStarr
Microsoft
Hi Marshall, are you using the Edge browser locally on your server hosting SharePoint? If so, you're likely running into User Account Control elevation issue. By default, Microsoft Edge will work with UAC to strip out the local administrator permission from your security token, so SharePoint Central Administration may not recognize that you're a local administrator. There are two ways you can address this:
- Close all of your Microsoft Edge web browser instances, then launch the SharePoint Central Administration shortcut from the Windows Start menu. This will ensure Edge is launched in a way that doesn't strip out your local administrator security token, and you should have full access to all SharePoint Central Administration functionality.
- Launch the Microsoft Edge web browser from a different computer than the one hosting SharePoint Central Administration. UAC doesn't work across computers, so it won't be able to strip out your local administrator security token when browsing to SharePoint Central Administration on a different computer.
- Giles HamsonCopper ContributorFrom a high level point of view... will this SharePoint Server Subscription Edition be considered the final on-premises release that will be updated with CU / PU and Security updates until on-premises demand does not warrant the effort from Microsoft? Or do you envision future major releases in the future?
- TroyStarr
Microsoft
Hi Giles, SharePoint Server Subscription Edition is our newest major release of SharePoint Server and transforms our engineering model to be much closer to how our cloud services work, including SharePoint Online. Instead of having to wait up to 3 years for a new major version to come out to get new features and capabilities, we'll plan to continue releasing new feature experiences for SharePoint Server Subscription Edition as soon as they're ready via our monthly patches. So while you could think of SharePoint Server Subscription Edition as the final on-premises release, that doesn't fully convey the fact that we'll continue to invest in new on-premises and hybrid feature experiences in SharePoint Server Subscription Edition. (Kind of like saying that SharePoint Online is the final cloud release.)- Giles HamsonCopper ContributorPerfect, exactly the answer I was looking for.
- Chris_Gilles_1337Copper ContributorWhat is the best method to allow external users to see the theme of my SharePoint site? For example: users outside of my domain can't see the site logo or general theme.
- Aria_ConsultingBrass ContributorWhat are your sharing settings set to?

Welcome to the SharePoint Server Subscription Edition Ask Microsoft Anything (AMA)! This live hour gives you the opportunity to ask questions directly to the Microsoft team. Please post any questions in a separate, new comment thread on this event. Thanks!

Thanks Emily! Hey everyone, my name is Troy Starr and I'm a Product Manager leading the SharePoint Server team at Microsoft. I've been with the SharePoint team for almost 20 years, having started working on Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 all the way up through SharePoint Server Subscription Edition. I often focus on IT admin features and our core infrastructure, originally as a member of the test team, then the developer team, and now the Product Manager team. I've personally worked on features like smigrate (how customers could upgrade/migrate their sites from SharePoint Team Services 1.0 to Windows SharePoint Services 2.0), Alternate Access Mappings, setup/deployment, disaster recovery, PowerShell, SSL certificate management, and more. I look forward to answering your questions in today's AMA! - Steve Zhang

- Mihal_EhvenCopper ContributorWe would like to create a rule that sends a notification only ONCE PER DAY when new files are created or uploaded to a particular folder. Just so we can see where new content has been added at a glance--not receive a notification for each file that is uploaded. Thanks.
- JBudkeCopper ContributorYou can actually do this with the built in alerts without having to create a rule. They have an option for a daily summary of uploads, changes and deletes.
- Mihal_EhvenCopper ContributorFOUND IT! THANKS!
- Raffaele CamillettiCopper ContributorYou can set a standard alert (ref. Alert me) for that specific folder, configuring the reminder for one time for day (you can choose the time).
