Windows 11 update stuck on KB5040442
Hello everyone,
For several weeks, my Windows 11 OS has not been able to install the KB5040442 KB.
Each time it starts, it downloads the LB, installs it and then fails.
I tried to follow the procedures to clean the KB repository from my computer. Nothing works.

Can you help me?
Thanking you in advance

I tried downloading and manually installing the update from Microsoft Update Catalog and it still didn't work for me. Maybe it would for you?

I have a similar problem with update KB5040442. The update fails, after which the computer fails to boot successfully. I've tried: command = 'sfc /scannow', revert to a 'restore point', disconnect all peripherals, boot from a recovery disk (it does this, then immediately tries to install the update and falls over again without allowing me access). I am reluctant to reinstall Windows 11, as that will require me to spend time reinstalling all my apps.
- ddjunkerCopper ContributorSince it's a 22H2 specific update, I manually updated to 23H2 (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11) and that eliminated the need to solve it.

I am on 23H2. Reinstalled it a few weeks ago, after having problems with some previous cumulative update installs. At least doing that sped up my PC a bit, as it kept off programs I no longer needed. Still receiving other OS updates without issues, it's this one that's boot looping for me without being installed.
I tried all of the other solutions outlined in this thread, and none of them work for me. Not going to bother reinstalling again. Hopefully a fix will come soon. - Christophe150Copper Contributor
Hello,
Finally, I actually reinstalled Windows on its partition. Everything is back to normal. I wonder how unsuspecting users can get away with this. 🙂
Thanks again for inspiring me to have the courage to take on this task!Best regards

Hello, I am not a Tech person, and I THINK the last update done by my W11 pc was this KB5040442. My pc now wont boot, and tries to self diagnose, fails, then reboots, offers me advanced options, of which one is to shut down. My PC wont boot to anything, least of all windows, and is almost unfixable u

nless I can prepare a USB drive with the fix for this. What can I do ??? I have no PC !!!
- sergiosousa85Copper ContributorI'm having the same issue.
Tried the same things you did, and it didn't work out. - james2415Copper Contributor
I have the same/similar issue with KB5040442 in many ways.
Windows Update tried to install it overnight in a scheduled update, and I got up in the morning and my PC was running, but the screen was blank, and keyboard was disabled and nothing would wake it up. Did a hard reset, and it came up with various things in the Windows 11 bootup including installing updates, and fixing startup etc, but it would result in the same thing, else the dotted circle loading before windows start - being locked in one position.
Another hard reset or two later, and it would eventually start windows, but the update was not installed.
Tring it again resulted in similar, but sometimes locking up part way through the Welcome screen where you put in your password, or after that, and keyboard control again disappeared (USB keyboard).
I once had the desktop load, partially, not all startup apps would load, and it ended up locking up.
Ended up removing the update and hiding it from Windows Update so it didn't try it again, but I have no idea what is going wrong with it or why it's not working.
I tried installing it manually too, but no change.
SFC /scannow and DISM commands revealed nothing for me either.
