Why I can't upgrade Windows 11 23H2 to 24H2 on my PC?

Many of the options I have come across (including some in this thread) seem to only apply when upgrading from Win 10 to Win 11.  The solution that worked for me (being stuck on Win 11 23H2) was using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant from this page:

Download, run, and after about 1 work day it will get to 100% and eventually reboot.  Viola, now running 25H2.  Then it rebooted two more times.

I just finished this process:  Download the Windows 11 25H2 iso only from a Microsoft site.  Right-click the iso and Mount it.  Right-click setup.exe and Run as Administrator.  Select whether or not you want to keep your data and let the iso install anew the Windows 11 25H2 OS.  It took hours...  Good luck. 

I had a similar issue when trying to upgrade Windows 11 23H2, error code: 0x80244018

My SoftwareDistribution folder was about 7GB in size, my PC was on Lan network, Proxy was set to automatic.

My solution was to switch to USB WiFi stick and then update, worked like a charm. Switched back to LAN and succssesfuly received latest 26200.7171 update. Hope this helps for you.

Windows 11 24H2 is still rolling out in stages, so even supported devices won’t always get it immediately. If your PC is stuck on 23H2, it’s usually because Windows Update placed a temporary compatibility hold. This can be triggered by outdated drivers, old BIOS/firmware, storage controller issues, or certain apps that Microsoft hasn’t cleared yet.

A few things you can try:

1. Update BIOS and all major drivers
(Chipset, iGPU, storage/NVMe, and any OEM utilities.)
Older firmware is one of the most common reasons 24H2 doesn’t appear.

2. Check your system partitions
The EFI or Recovery partition being too small can block the upgrade.

3. Install 24H2 manually
Use Microsoft’s official Installation Assistant or the 24H2 ISO from their download page. This usually works even when Windows Update hasn’t offered it yet.

In short: your hardware is fine—your PC is just held back for compatibility reasons. Updating firmware/drivers or using the Installation Assistant is the quickest way to get 24H2.

I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 7 with 118 GB capacity.  I bought it new two years ago. Most of the capacity seems already used by Microsoft.  I would have to delete basically my whole remaining computer to free up the 30 GB for 24H2. If this upgrade needs that much space to essentially wipe the computer it seems more like goodbye computer. I hope Microsoft figures out some way to keep loyal customers. I'm not buying a new computer every other year. Any suggestions are appreciated. 

If you can't upgrade Windows 11 23H2 to 24H2 , you can use the Media Creation Tool:

1. Go to the Microsoft Download page for Windows 10. Click on Download tool now to get the Media Creation Tool.
2. Once downloaded, open the tool by double-clicking it. Accept the license terms when prompted.
3. Select Upgrade this PC now if prompted. The tool will check for updates and download the necessary files for the upgrade.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the upgrade process. Make sure you keep your files if you don’t want to lose anything during the upgrade.
5. After the installation completes, your computer will restart. Follow any final setup prompts to finish the process.

Tips Before Upgrading Windows 11 23H2 to 24H2

• Ensure your system meets the requirements for 24H2.
• Make sure you have enough disk space for the upgrade. Ideally, you’ll want around 20 GB free.
• Ensure you have a reliable internet connection to avoid interruption during the download.

Users can't upgrade Windows 11 23H2 to 24H2. I had a similar issue when trying to upgrade Windows 11 23H2 to 24H2. Step 3. Prepare your system: Press Windows + I, open Settings > System > Storage, clean up your C: drive, make sure 25GB is free, and update all drivers in Device Manager, especially Intel SST.

Step 4. Double-click the .msu file, click Yes to run as administrator, follow the prompts to install, multiple reboots may be required.
