What is the future of SharePoint Classic Site?
Introduction of "modern" collaboration sites opens a question "what is the future of SharePoint classic sites?" The classic site is used to build Intranet portals or collaboration portal with custom master pages & page layouts.
Will the modern site replace "classic" site ? How long the "classic" sites will be available to all customers?
Please share your thoughts or visions.

Let's hope the SharePoint Summit in May gives us a roadmap toward feature party in Modern Team Sites, with an introduction and first steps into Modern Publishing whetting appetites for Ignite later in the year. :)
I can't imagine Classic sites going away anytime soon until there's complete feature parity between the two. At this point you can't accomodate simple changes like the banner, or a multi-column layout. Intranet / Modern Workspaces / whatever you want to call them are the bread & butter of SharePoint. I'll be curious to see what the May event holds, but I can't believe that phasing out Classic sites is going to happen anytime soon.
They've mentioned more features will be delivered in modern team site. I hope the May event will provide more clarity and roadmap.
- Well, the reality is that we don't have a clue about how long Microsoft is going to support classic SPO Sites....you are absolutely right, modern SPO Sites does not allow at the moment to make the same kind of customizations we can dot in classic SPO sites but I expect Microsoft will provides way to overcome this in the future...and bear also in mind that no matter if you are in classic SPO Sites or modern ones, you shouldn't customize SPO master pages
