Site Search Showing News & Results from other site collections
For any modern site collection (Modern Team Site/Communication Site OOB), the search bar that shows at the top of the left navigation is scoped to the site. See example here, where I search for a folder that is clearly displayed in a document library:
But we have one site collection where the search functionality does not work this way. Instead, it seems to return results from every site collection except the one the search is being performed on. This result is repeatable whether I am searching on the home page, or trying to search when viewing a document library on the site. In the example below, I search for the clearly visible "Action Items Workseet", but it does not even show up in the suggested results. [Forgive the redacting... privacy and whatnot]
I cannot figure out why this would be happening and am thinking it's a bug. The site is appearing in enterprise search results, as it is configured to do. Additionally, when clicking on the search bar at the top of the home page, News from other site collections show up... when it should just be news from this specific site collection.
Anyone seen this before or have any ideas of what could be going on?
Update on this, the following steps were taken to fix the issue:
- Reindex site
- Reindex affected library
- Check site and site collection result sources via settings, make sure default is set to Local SharePoint Results
In this case, somehow the site-level result source default was set to Documents, which explains why results across different site collections were showing. Still plenty of other odd behavior that wasn't quite explained (like News showing from other sites... it was always the same News items over the course of a week), but following these steps got things working as expected.

- Yep, seems to be a bug since the search box in any modern SPO site cannot be customized (at the moment) in any way, so the initial scope as you well mention is the site and then you can always expand your serch so something si wrong with that particular site collection
Thank you for the verification, I didn't think there was a way to modify the modern search experience but good to check. Off to file a PSS case... will post back here if I learn anything interesting.
