SharePoint Designer 2013 Stuck at the Windows Security Window

I have used SharePoint Designer 2013 (SPD) with our SharePoint Online sites to create workflows.  This week when I try to open a site with SPD a Windows Security window pops up and entering my credentials does not work.  The window does not go away.  I have the problem on the sites I have worked on and new ones.  I have tried the following without luck.

IE cache cleared.

WebsiteCache cleared

ProxyAssemblyCache cleared

Windows credentials cleared

SPD 2013 repaired

SPD 2013 uninstall and reinstall

Another computer with a new SPD 2013 install

Cancel button (willing to try anything at this point)

My supervisor, who is a SharePoint administrator,  does not have a problem.   I have site collection permissions. I do not have  problem accessing the sites just a problem accessing them with SharePoint Designer.

Any ideas on what I can try next?

I FINALLY found a solution!!  And it was SO simple.

At the Office 365 sign-in page select "Keep me signed in" then enter your user name and, if needed, password.  (see attached)

The new sign-in experience does not provide the checkbox.

If this does not work for you then you may want to review the entire discussion to see other possible solutions.

David Cox post notes that he was able to get it resolved via a Office 365 support ticket.  I believe only SharePoint Administrators can submit the ticket, e.g. I cannot as a Site Collection Administrator.

The "Keep me signed in" solution no longer works!

When I enter my user name in the old and new experience I am now directed to an organization page to log on.  A

"Stay signed in?" window pops up.  I select Yes and still have the problem.

David Cox seems to have had luck with a support ticket via Office 365.  I am not an admin, so I do not have that option.

So, once again I am stick at the credentials window when I try to use SharePoint Designer.  I will update if a solution is found.

Hi CatherineB,  Did you manage to solve this?  I am having the same issue and have tried everything with no success so far.  Regards, Debbie

Still have a problem, but I thought I'd do an update...

The problem is not related to Windows 10.  Coworker does not have a problem, so I logged on to her machine with no luck.  If she or my supervisor are logged on to their machines I CAN log on via the SPD account with no problem.  Yes, we were in communication with MS who claimed it was my computer problem.  I have tried about at least 7-8 computers both Windows 7 and 10 with no luck, so I believe that is not the problem.   Network ruled out AD, AD groups, and location.  SP Administrator has worked with MS and even stripped all the permissions and added me back with no luck.

Authentication seems to be a keyword in my readings.

      Hi

is there a solution ?? Have the same issue. SPD is enabled at all sites. All sites are affected and I am the site admin. Using SPD 32Bit SP1

Tried different sites but nothing works...

The login page keeps opening an I got the following message (if I say "Remember Login"; Sorry its German ;-) ):

No luck yet!!  BUT, for a brief time a few days ago, it worked!  Then prompt returned a few hours later…boo!

I am not sure if this is related, but I had been out for several days.  When I signed  on a message popped up asking if I wanted to stay logged on which has never happened at work (password is not needed when on the network).  The authentication message seemed to return after I cleared the IE cache and did a reboot because datasheet view would not work in SP2010 ( I work with SharePoint Online and SharePoint 2010.)

A coworker was able to resolve the same problem by changing:

        1. BasicAuthLevel from 1 to 2.

        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters

On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

Type BasicAuthLevel, and then press Enter.

Right-click BasicAuthLevel, and then click Modify.

In the Value data box, type 2, and then click OK.

        0 - Basic authentication disabled

1 - Basic authentication enabled for SSL connections only

2 - Basic authentication enabled for SSL and non-SSL connections

Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

        2. Adding site to AuthForwardServerList.

Update for anyone else who is having this problem.  My team mates who do not have a problem are working with Windows 7 while I have 10.   One who could use SPD on their machine logged on to mine and had the same results.  I will post more updates if we find a solution.

  • Are you trying with both accounts on the same PC?  Is the difference only the acount or also the PC that you are running from? If you are running from different PCs then within SharePoint Designer can you try to switch accounts and login with both accounts and see if it makes a difference.

Also check if you are logged in with multiple accounts. You can check this also under switch accounts (File -> Account -> Switch Account)

The account that works belongs to  my supervisor and she is using a different computer.  She also has a higher admin role than I have.

My account, that does not work, was tested on two different computers.  There was no switching of accounts on either.

      Thanks Pieter.

  • did you also remove the profiles of spd in the roaming etc?

Whoops, yes Paul.  Left off the list.  Downside of not keeping it as I was troubleshooting.  In defense I thought the "typical" fixes would work.

      Thanks!

      Hi Dean

No, how could I have missed that step?   I gave it a go and, alas, it didn't work. Maybe global administrators pushed a permission button for my role?

      Curiouser and curiouser!

      Thanks.

are you trying to open a new modern site? I have been told that this won't work, but I have not seen any documentation that confirms this new limitation.
