SharePoint Audit

I have a need to perform an audit of my SharePoint. Generally, I need to know how many "real/authentic" sites I have. When I go into the SharePoint Admin Center, I see ALL SharePoint sites (most are listed as Team Sites). However, a SharePoint "team site" is created whenever an app is created. For example: MS Team, Planner, MS Group, PowerBI, etc. Is there any way to discern the origination of a SharePoint site (for example, a team site was generated because somebody created a Planner)?

I can get the number of Teams from the Teams Admin Center, but that still leaves me with a whole lot of random "team sites" listed in the SharePoint Admin Center - and I assume a good number of those are not "real/active" sites.

I know I can look at the last activity, # of files, page views, etc. but that I proving to be extremely cumbersome.

Just because a SPO site was created when someone created a Team does not make it any less "real" than a site created from any other technique.
The new SPO Admin Center shows how often a site is used and how much data it contains. There is "Least Active Sites" view that should be helpful.
The O365 Admin Center Reports section has a lot of reports showing usage

I always like to ask people what they are going to do with the data they request. What decisions are they going to make and what actions are they going to take. I frequently find that the data requested is not going to be very helpful and that they will be better served to get something else.

I understand that - I am not interested in sites that were created from a MS Team. I have the Team Admin Center for those sites. I am interested in the sites that are created when an App is used such as planner, power bi, etc.

The site usage data is not a true sense of analytics for sites created because of Apps. If a site is generated because a planner was created, then the analytics is not helpful as the site is not updated when a new task is created in the planner. Therefore, the site looks like it is inactive (no activity) and I could be removing an active planner.

I have a very specific reason for needing this data for my needed action. And, yes, it would be extremely helpful for me to be able to obtain more detailed reports.

  • AFAIK, there is not a way to know if a SPO Team Site was created because a Planner Plan was created, a Group was created or a Team was created

jcgonzalezmartinthere is some information in the Audit log that shows when a Service Account creates a Site. For example if you go to the Azure AD Audit log, and use Microsoft Teams Services as the Actor, you will find every that account did.

If you choose Add Group as the Activity, it will show all of the different account that have been used.

It is tricky and poorly documented, the filters seem to be "Case Sensitive" which makes it even more difficult

I think this script can help you detect how many sites originated from MS Teams and how many from other apps and also inactive groups based on activity. You can also find powershell script for yammer originated groups but not other sources yet i guess.

Ok, thanks so much. This seems a bit complicated. I spoke with MS, they indicated they are working on an interface. But we'll have to see how that goes. Reporting has always be very lacking with SharePoint. I hope they are working on making it easier for those of us who have to provide statistical analysis. Thanks again.
