Preview .eml and .msg files in SharePoint on premises
I have a question regarding Preview of files. In Office 365 there are a lot of options to preview files. But I am looking into SharePoint server.
And especially into eml and msg files can you preview them in SharePoint On Premises?
And is it already possible in the 2013 version or do you need to upgrade?
If a upgrade will be made it will be 2019.
Is it also important to have Enterprise or Standard if it works?
Thanks in advance.

The SharePoint on-premises 2013, 2016, and 2019 do not support native preview for EML and MSG files. Like Office 365, the on-premises versions do not include the built-in viewer for the file formats. It simply means that in SharePoint 2013, there is no option to preview for EML and MSG files, in SharePoint 2016 / 2019 also there is also no native preview, and in Edition, it doesn’t change the behaviour.
So, SharePoint on-premises does not have the ability to preview EML or MSG files, as it can only let you download them, but not preview them inside the browser. And if you really want to preview the files, then you can use the third-party plugins or softwares, you cannot directly view them in SharePoint on-premises.

Trevor is correct. OOTB this is not possible. You will need to deploy 3rd party apps (e.g. AppSource https://appsource.microsoft.com/en-us/product/office/wa104380931) to provide this functionality. These apps not only provide preview capabilities they also provide functionality to extract email metadata like subject, from, conversion id, .. and capture the values into SharePoint columns. The latter is obviously useful for searching, viewing, filtering, ...
Paul | SLIM Applications No version of SharePoint Server includes that functionality. The file previewer is only available in SharePoint Online.
