Icon of Document Sets changed to default folder icon - Support claims it is "by design"

Some of our customers heavily rely on the Document Set functionality. Last week we noticed that the icon of Document Set has changed within a list view from

to

This seems somehow to be related to the new functionality to change the colour of the folder. All tenants which already received this new feature show the wrong icon for Document Sets.

All other locations ("New" menu, Details pane) are still using the Doc Set icon, so the list view seems the only place where the icon has changed for a Doc Set.

I had a call with MS support today, and they told me (like on many SP-related issues before) that this is "by design". I am using Document Sets since 2010 - claiming that it is "by design" to change the Doc Set icon to the folder icon is like changing the icon of a Word file to the generic file icon.

    Hi Marco!
Same experience happened to our tenants with this new folders color feature regarding document sets.

Obviously, this is not "by design", as this tenants have been using document sets for years, and the document set icon has allways been different from the standard folder icon.

This is not a desired change and should be fixed, and as you said, it would be like suddenly changing a well known icon for another (used by other file type), causing confusion to the end user. As if suddenly the power point icon was the same as the excel icon.

We can leverage power automate to change the color of the NOW  yellow folder icon of a document set (for example, to gray color, so it is destinguishable from a regular folder), but obviously it is just ridicoulous to execute a power automate flow whenever a document set is created in every document library on a tenant (and just for something as trivial as coloring the icon, which anyways could be changed by the user at any moment).

So, in conclusion, coloring folders is a nice feature but please, it shouldn't affect the document sets content types icon, as it is important to distinguish them from the regular folders.

I hope someone in Microsoft realizes this and fix it, so document sets icon wont be affected by this new coloring feature, keeping their original icon.

  • MSchmittnaegel IBG-ZPU Yes, changing the color of the folder feature affected the document set icons for all the tenants where this feature is released.

I have seen many customers reporting this issue and I think Microsoft is aware of this issue. Hope they hear us and make the changes accordingly so that we can get the document set icon back as it was previously.

I have added a new feedback on the SharePoint feedback portal requesting Microsoft to bring back the old document set icon. Can you please vote on the feedback/idea so that it will reach to Microsoft team and they will look into it? Thanks!

It seems someone else was more successful convincing MS Support that it is a bug:

Checked it in my tenants: Doc Set icon is back again 🙂
