Icon of Document Sets changed to default folder icon - Support claims it is "by design"
Hi Marco!
Same experience happened to our tenants with this new folders color feature regarding document sets.
Obviously, this is not "by design", as this tenants have been using document sets for years, and the document set icon has allways been different from the standard folder icon.
This is not a desired change and should be fixed, and as you said, it would be like suddenly changing a well known icon for another (used by other file type), causing confusion to the end user. As if suddenly the power point icon was the same as the excel icon.
We can leverage power automate to change the color of the NOW yellow folder icon of a document set (for example, to gray color, so it is destinguishable from a regular folder), but obviously it is just ridicoulous to execute a power automate flow whenever a document set is created in every document library on a tenant (and just for something as trivial as coloring the icon, which anyways could be changed by the user at any moment).
So, in conclusion, coloring folders is a nice feature but please, it shouldn't affect the document sets content types icon, as it is important to distinguish them from the regular folders.
I hope someone in Microsoft realizes this and fix it, so document sets icon wont be affected by this new coloring feature, keeping their original icon.
