What if the author's name is "Elizabeth" but I don't know if she goes by "Elizabeth" or "Liz"? Since SharePoint doesn't support suffix searching like "*liz" how do I find the document? Using the OR keyword works here but I'm just expanding on the example above. In the case of a list where the title contains names of software I can't come up with every "OR" variation I'm looking for (e.g ZIP, WinZip, 7-Zip, ... ,???Zip).

Short answer: this isn't a strong search attribute because of the engine limitation. Pick another attribute to search on, or be prepared to scroll through hits related to all Liz's and Elizabeth's. I don't think you have a good solution either way, really.
