Outlook Search not showing Recent Emails (December-2021)
Hi All,
The outlook search option stopped working properly after WIndows10 update.
The issue has happened after installing a security update from Windows (December 14, 2021âKB5008212).
I had tried re-building the Indexing but it was same. Once the issue started I had searched for the solutions and finally found that recent Windows update has created the issue. I had uninstalled that particular update and the search issue was fixed.
So let us know when the fix will be available for this bug?

I have been dealing with this issue for months -- so long so that Microsoft got frustrated and blamed us.
FWIW:
We're running Exchange 2019 on MS Server 2019. Outlook 2013 works fine. Anything newer than Outlook 2013 doesn't show recent emails nor recent calendar items when searching.
The Windows scroll bars are really narrow now -- so there's that.
- TMadd27Copper ContributorI am having the same problem. Any fix announced? This is an absolutely unacceptable failure on the part of Microsoft.

To the right of your search box in Outlook, change the selection from current mailbox to all mailboxes or all outlook items. I believe KB5008212 screwed something up, but this resolved my search issues
- PaulBrainardCopper ContributorOr Current Folder.. There is a registry key you can add to make one of these the default, HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Search\DefaultSearchScope (DWORD) - since setting it in the actual program options doesn't seem to do anything. . .
I think there are a couple of separate issues with search in Outlook, easily confused. One is related to Windows search indexing & the recent updates - recent results are missing. Another is related to Exchange mailboxes & FAST searches, and has been cropping up for years - only recent results are found (or none.) Probably others as well. Search in Windows has always been a mess, especially in Outlook. And like always, redesigning it opened the whole can of worms all over again. . .
- robmar0seCopper ContributorHi Would someone help me trying to uninstall KB5008212?
Unable to uninstall, it shows in the list of updates, but not in the list of updates that may be uninstalled. When trying to uninstall via Command prompt it says it isn't installed; digging down it is indicated as being superceded.
It was insatlled on 17/12 (after 20h2), the next rollup KB5008876 was installed on 14/01 is also superceded. KB5010793 was updated today, but doesn't show in my list of updates!! (updates show as fully upto date).
I don't have system protection backups so unable to rollback Win10.
Any suggestion how to get rid of 8212 to resolve Outlook search issues?- Marcin_CzernikCopper Contributoruninstall wont help, only one good reaction is workaround, make a key in registry:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/outlook-search-not-showing-recent-emails-after-windows-update-kb5008212-cc5345cf-8007-403a-bb23-f3818653c2df
In Windows, right-click Start, and then select Run. In the Open: box type regedit, and then click OK. This will open the registry editor.
Find this subkey in the registry and then click it:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
Click Edit > New > Key and name the new key Windows Search.
Select the new Windows Search key.
Click Edit > New > DWORD Value.
Type PreventIndexingOutlook for the name of the DWORD, and then press Enter.
Right-click PreventIndexingOutlook, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 1 to enable the registry entry, and then click OK.
Exit Registry Editor, and then restart Outlook.
- Labsy007Copper ContributorAt first I thought my customer has the same issue, but in their case with on-premises Exchange 2010 server:
- at least for some users, the missing mails cannot be found in Outlook as well via OWA Webmail! Which is weird.
- more weird is that MacOS users with Office for Mac have the same problem
As a temporary workaround I can (on Windows clients) restart Windows Search service, restrart Outlook, which then catches up with missing indexes. Takes few minutes to index those few hundred mails and up it works until client restarts computer.
But what about MacOS clients?
And most of all, OWA Outlook Web Access - it's server 2008R2, that's Windows, but not nearly the technology of Windows 10. How can it all has the same issue with search indexing on Exchange Server?- PaulBrainardCopper Contributor
You might have a problem with the Exchange index on the server & need to rebuild it. Use the cmdlet Test-ExchangeSearch and powershell script ResetSearchIndex.ps1 if necessary.

May I just ask, and maybe this question has been answered previously but...
I'm running 3 computers which have been upgraded to Windows 11 Pro with Office 2016 installed and everything is working well, I have a client who has a PC which has been upgraded from Win 7 to 10 with the latest version of Office installed who is experiencing the same Outlook indexing issue even though they have all available Windows and Office update installed.
Does the issue have anything to do with the fact that the PC has been upgraded to Widows 10 and is this scenario familiar to anyone else?
- RaintekCopper ContributorW11 after the last update - STILL not fixed.
- andreasoc2350Copper Contributorhi guys
but it is not clear to me if after the latest Microsoft OBB, someone has solved the search problem or not.
Thank you

Interesting. I have a user on MacOS who's unable to get search results newer than October 2021 with Old Outlook but using New Outlook does work.
This is the first result I've come across in my search for a solution.Edit: Apparently the MacOS update on October 25th caused the problem. Coincidentally, an update was just released yesterday morning in the App Store to resolve this issue. Good luck Windoze users! đ

So it does seem that the Windows 10 21H2 update fixes the issue and the KB5008212 update disappeared. All the computers in our office are working now so far. VineeshKV88

As 21h2 was installed before 8212 the outlook indexing issue was created after 21h2 was installed. Rebuilding teh index takes over 24 hours, so to date not convinved that thye rebuild resolves anything.
We have 6 pcs running win10 with the problem, we have one win11 with outlook just installed, no issue yet
Fingers crossed we get a fix asap. Just add me to the list for the fix
- Paolo_DelReCopper ContributorWrong.
I was on 21H2 before receiving KB5008212 and it broke outlook search.
Last Tuesday the new KB5009543 was released and it overwrites the previous KB5008212, so you won't see it installed anymore, but the new update doesn't fix outlook search and the problem persists.
The solution for me was to uninstall both updates and prevent them from reinstalling themselves. I will have to do the same next month with the next cumulative update, if it doesn't fix the problem.- TiberiuMalceaCopper ContributorPaolo_DelRe: I don't have anymore the KB5008212 on any of my computers (due to KB5009543, probably, which breaks L2TP VPN & other stuff on the other side, while this has become already normal in the update saga). But search was working all the time in my case. There are different environments, probably.
Yesterday (January 17th 2022) Microsoft released an OOB update (KB5010793 for W10 20H1 and above), to correct the issues of the above KB5009543.
On the other hand, all my customers reported search issue fixed after installing 21H2 update. But your info is welcome!
Cheers!

- TiberiuMalceaCopper ContributorHello, guys!
I have a bunch of feedback from my customers' users, stating that, after update Windows 10 to 21H2, search is working fine in Outlook (the "normal" search). And this without any registry changes or services restart (I know this is a sensitive topic in corporate environment).
Myself I had no issue with Outlook search on any of my 3 usual computers (different versions of office - 2016, 2019, 365, 32/64bits), although I had the infamous KB5008212 installed. BUT I already had the 21H2 update installed on all computers in December '21.
(And yes, I have between 100 and 200 GBytes of PSTs data on each of mine three computers) :peace:
Hope this helps.

I have found that the registry settings to disable Windows Search for Outlook, and disable server-assisted search do not help my users - only some of which seem to have this issue. Creating a new Outlook profile will make it work again for a short time. However the following two work-arounds are doing the trick:
- Select "All Outlook Items" in the drop-down list. It only seems to be the "Current Mailbox" that has problems searching. Of course this returns more than is probably desired & users have to sort through it all.
- Disable cached mode in the Exchange account. Slows searches down, especially for remote-connected users.
