Notifications Not responding

I was sure I had seen this problem described with various solutions, but cannot find anything on it.

I am using "classic" Outlook for Windows (16.0.18526.20168) with my gmail work account - I do not like the gmail interface. Until quite recently, when a notification appeared about new email I could, if it needed to be addressed immediately, click on the notification and it would open the incoming message.

This does not happen any more. I click the notification and it simply disappears.

I have checked that notifications are on (they must be as they do appear); I have checked that do not disturb is off but still there is no response when I click a notification.

Any ideas? Operating system is W11 Pro (24H2, build 26100.3624)

  • So this screenshot shows you the windows notifications, if you click the bell...you can see if Windows has notifications on and then the 2nd screenshot shows you the email when it arrives.

Outlook has 4 options for email delivery see 3rd screenshot) and I have display alert on, but all I get is the windows notification, which does not have an option to open the email. Desktop alert does not work for me, so if this is what you meant, not 100% sure if that's not working for just us or everyone.

The desktop alert is now hidden in the upper arrow of the system tray area(1st screenshot) but it doesn't open the email.

Thank you for this, but it does not appear to answer my question. Alerts in both Windows and Outlook appear to be configured. I have checked the various ones that you suggest and find that everything (apart from "change mouse") is set to on:

Looks like Outlook is "on" and this is what I have tried to explain all along - the notifications appear but they do not respond in the way they used to when clicked. Nothing happens when I click a notification (and not the "X"). Why would this functionality be removed?

      Now for Windows notifications settings:

Looks like they are configured to be on and Outlook (classic) is also set to notify...

Finally, if we look at the Outlook (classic) settings, they look to be configured "sensibly":

I will try to elevate the Outlook notifications to "high" and see if that changes their behaviour. Otherwise I am at a loss.

Could there be some buried registry entry that has got corrupted by my very brief foray into "super duper new and unimproved Outlook" (whose functionality and visual properties I did not like when I played with it a few months ago)?

Any other thoughts on this will be appreciated.

Hi John, unfortunately I am not understanding. Some features of Outlook don't work for me, I tried desktop alerts and they don't work for me as they used to. Some times features missing are hard to troubleshoot. I will back out of this question so others can try to step in.

As a newbie here, how long does it take a moderator to approve a reply? I submitted one this morning but still do not see it - more than 8 hours later...

Hi JohnH, I see your comment now. From what I learned, posts are on moderate until you've posted enough or replied enough. The moderators can take a few days to approve.

  • Are you talking about the Windows notifications or Outlook notifications? There are a few options for Outlook. Maybe you turned off the Windows notifications and that disabled Outlook notifications?

As far as I can tell, all notifications are on - but if you have suggestions where I can defintitely confirm this, then I am all ears (as it were). They appear from the side when an email comes in; however, when I click on the notification, nothing happens. In the past it would open the associated message so it could be dealt with. Now, nothing. It may as well not pop up...
