Can't connect to OneDrive from my PC!

Hi there,

I've had issues recently with connecting and syncing OneDrive on my PC so I contacted the Microsoft support service and they recommended I uninstall then reinstall the OneDrive app but since then I can't connect at all! I keep receiving the 0x8004de40 error message.

FYI: I use an Ethernet connection on a private/home network (fiber optic), I have Windows 11 (up to date), on a desktop PC. I tried in WiFi but I get the same message. Using the inetcpl.cplI command, I also made sure only TLS 1.2 and 1.3 were ticked (as recommended by Microsoft support).

Bizarrely OneDrive works fine on my laptop connected in WiFi to the same network...

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help as I'm at the end of my tether here! šŸ™ƒ

In fact, by re-enabling TLS 1.0 and SSL3 as you suggested, I'm back to square one: I can't connect to OneDrive at all and keep getting the error 0x8004de40 message. Bizarrely my husband works on an identical computer, connected in the same way to the same network and he has NO PROBLEM with his OneDrive. I checked his settings using the inetcpl.cpl command, mirrored them on my PC and it STILL doesn't work!

no improvement! in fact my problem is now that OneDrive does open, as I said in my previous answer, but doesn't connect automatically to my account as it did before.

    Your error 0x8004de40 means:

"There was a problem connecting to OneDrive" — specifically, it can't establish a secure TLS connection with Microsoft's servers.

Check Your Internet Security Settings via Internet Options

Even though TLS is enabled, other settings might block OneDrive.

    Press Win + R, type: inetcpl.cpl

    Go to the Advanced tab

    Ensure these are enabled (āœ”):

Use SSL 3.0 (optional for legacy only)

Use TLS 1.0 (try enabling it temporarily)

    Use TLS 1.1

    Use TLS 1.2

    Use TLS 1.3

Click Reset advanced settings (bottom right)

    Apply and reboot

    Reset OneDrive Completely

This clears OneDrive’s saved state and forces a fresh reconnect.

Run this in the Run dialog (Win + R):

    %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

If OneDrive doesn’t restart after 1–2 minutes, start it manually:

    %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe

    Disable Proxy (if active)

    • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy
    • Turn everything off (especially if ā€œUse a proxy serverā€ is enabled)

    Also check via Command Prompt:

    netsh winhttp show proxy

If it shows a proxy, reset it:

    netsh winhttp reset proxy

Maybe some third-party security software (e.g., Kaspersky, Bitdefender) block OneDrive connections.

Try disabling your antivirus temporarily and check if OneDrive connects.

Thank you so much for your answer! I have re-enabled SSL 3 and TLS 1.0 and will let you know how it went.

At the moment, Onedrive does open when turning on my PC but takes AGES to connect to my account.
