Teams to skype messages and vice versa

We are currently using SFB (Skype for business) and are planning to migrate to Teams.  The issue is we need our receptionists to have desk phones because it makes calling and transferring so much easier because they have expansion modules (sidecars) that you can use (example Yealink T48G with EXP40), which works well with SFB.  As far as I know, there is currently no phone manufacturer that has an expansion module that supports Teams (The Yealink T56A supports Teams, but not with the EXP50 module).

So we are thinking of converting all our users to Teams including the receptionists, and have everyone use Teams on the desktop but leave the physical desk phones logged in using SFB.  When we tested it though it didn't work as I hoped, the user could not transfer calls from her desk phone (again, SFB) to anyone that uses Teams on the desktop or tablet (we tested Islands Mode and Teams Only mode).  Am I doing something wrong or is this a limitation? Teams users cannot communicate (chat or phone) with SFB and vice versa?  If not, any suggestions?

Thanks.

  • Yes you can talk to skype users from Teams, but only in Teams Only mode. You can't just switch it and test it, it can take some days for the client cache to update and recognize the change. Also your endpoints cannot be islands either, you need one side Teams only, and the other side Skype Only and wait. Islands is 0 interop and will only cause headaches. If your Islands org settings now and everyone still uses skype I would recommend you changing it to Skype Only. Then move people Teams Only as they request.

Just to confirm, you mean I can talk to (chat and phone) SFB users INTERNALLY from Teams? Microsoft support told me I couldn't. What do you mean by "one side needs to be"...which side? Again, the issue is no desk phones supporting the expansion modules so our receptionists can use Teams on their desktop but need to use SFB on the desk phones. Thanks.

      • Yes you can interop from Teams to Skype users internally. That's why I said, your Teams users have to be Teams Only and Skype Skype Only. If anyone is on islands, then it will not cross from one to the other.

As far as phone system goes, when I had Teams Only user use a skype phone I still used skype login, this was a year ago thou, so not sure how / if it's changed in regards to how presence works or if it even works, because it used to not work previously with presence, it was like the phone was still in Skype but the calls would ring both Teams and my phone.

Hi, what is the difference between the kinds of transfer? Basically, someone from outside or inside calls our main#, and the receptionist would transfer it to someone else in the office.

What does that list mean? Does that mean desk phones that are certified for skype but can be logged into with Teams? Or that I can switch our whole Org to Teams Only (so that users can use Teams on their desktops and phones) but continue using SFB on the desk phones?
