Teams is KILLING my Mac Every Day
I have a hard time believing I'm the first person to post this after not finding anything in the forum. I wouldn't doubt if Microsoft is deleting them because they can't figure out how to fix this issue. I can Google this issue and come up with numerous results but NOTHING has been able to fix this issue except for completely removing Teams all together, which unfortunately is not an option for me.
Teams is murdering my MacBook Pro 16" i9 with 16GB RAM every day. This was supposed to be the most kick-a$$ laptop at the time but Microsoft is slowly killing it with Teams. It causes serious lags and randomly decides when it wants to share the screen successfully. Other times, it just shows screen but no audio or vice versa. It's infuriating and I've lost my patience!
For context, I just re-installed my entire OS thinking it was an OS issue. I erased the entire drive and started from scratch. I did not do any kind of restore from backup. Everything was a fresh install yesterday.
I joined a teams meeting today in front of 100 people and Teams seemed to be running fine until I went to share screen and then everything choked. Those who were showing video on the call started flickering rapidly, which could have caused an epileptic seizure - it's that bad and I'm not joking, this isn't funny. IT'S VERY IRRITATING! My entire system. Mail, Calendar, Finder, and Preview (all Apple Apps, which should run super fast) started running like garbage with lags between 5 and 10 seconds - that's no joke. Upon reboot, it was normal again until I ran Teams for another meeting... reboot.
I firmly believe Teams is a virus and the developers should be fired for ignoring this issue. I've been dealing with this issue for nearly a year. Teams always causes some kind of lag issue whenever I run it. I have to reboot my machine to get my computer to work somewhat normal again. This is ridiculous!
I found an MS article mentioning how Teams uses memory because of this Chromium feature due to easier development. I don't care about the ease of development. I CARE about it working and NOT DELAYING MY PRODUCTIVITY. Forget Chromium!
Earlier this year, MS announced they were going to have a new and improved version in April 2021. I think two version have been released since then - None of them have solved this issue.
Is anyone at Microsoft Listening?!?!?!
Hi everyone, we're pleased to announce Microsoft Teams for Apple Silicon, which on the M1/M2 ARM builds, will have significantly faster performance than what's seen during the Rosetta emulation today! Here's our official roadmap ID for this release; Microsoft 365 Roadmap | Microsoft 365. More on this can be found here; Announcing Microsoft Teams optimized for Apple silicon - Microsoft Tech Community.
Users should see a significant performance boost with this release. And for the Intel Macs out there, we're still thinking about you! We have some large performance fixes coming that will help improve overall performance for the Intel version as well.
Thanks,
Sam Cosby, Teams Engineering PM

I found out how to fix it...!
Move to Google Workspace and use Google Chat/Meet instead
- NZPACMANBrass ContributorGoogle work space is a great option if you can get your IT folk and enterprise off MS. Personally I much prefer Zoom as a product.
- SilberBlauCopper ContributorListen guys, for all of you M1 - and now M2 - MacBook owners who are fed-up waiting for an official patch, there exists a beta version of MS-Teams for ARM-based Macs:
https://9to5mac.com/2022/04/25/microsoft-teams-apple-silicon-mac/
This has been around for at least six weeks now, and out of frustration, I decided to download and install it.
For now, it appears to have solved my issues with lag and overheating.
Bear in mind that is it still a Beta release, but it might just help you too:
https://statics.teams.cdn.office.net/production-osx/1.5.00.11505/Teams_osx.pkg- AphonicnoiseBrass ContributorThis has significant issues.
- LmntryxBrass Contributor
Have you tried the latest osx-arm64 builds?
These builds can be downloaded from https://github.com/ItzLevvie/MicrosoftTeams-msinternal/blob/master/defconfig#L17
- saidtsCopper ContributorTwo years complaining about this bug and nothing. Now, there's a brand new beta version for M1 Mac. My fear is Microsoft to forget Intel-based Mac users. Forever.
- arjunahmtpCopper ContributorI use both Intel Based 2019 MBA and M1 2020 MBA. More or less the experience is the same.. Horrible and annoying 99.9% of the time. can't understand why it takes more then 3-4 years for scale of company like MS to come up with a solution to this. Really hanging no to teams bcs there is no any other choice in my corporate environment. I worked with SLACK and ZOOM previously and its 1000times better than teams.

arjunahmtp im in the unfortunate position of needing to use both teams and slack for work and spend hours in screen-shares in both products every day. can't say im a massive teams fan but it definitely has its advantages over slack. one thing they both have in common though, is this CPU spike issue (2018 MBP). ive had the same problem with both these products on and off for the past few years and for me, its mostly been triggered by me sharing my screen and doesn't always resolve when i stop sharing. but then ive also had this issue with whatsapp and vscode so for me the cpu spike is a common flaw in electron-based apps. you could argue its the implementation but if its a mistake made so commonly and for so long, at some point my frustrations start shifting to electron rather than poor use of it. i dont have a decent, general, lightweight replacement for electron so its hard to criticise too heavily but at some point someone will. and if electron is still fat and thirsty then replace it is what everyone will do. until that day, if just one of these apps could stick to its fair share of system resources, that would be great. its not a big ask

Microsoft
Hi everyone - we should hopefully have some news for you by next week that you'll want to hear about Teams on Mac & Mac Performance. We absolutely hear you and care very deeply and are working to make the best and most performant version of Teams on Mac possible. Stay tuned.- AphonicnoiseBrass ContributorDid I miss the announcement?

Sam Cosby do you have an update at all? I joined a call today on a 2017 Macbook Pro, screen sharing with webcam on. I was using a 1080p external monitor with my Macbook open.
Fans span up extremely loudly, machine slowed to a halt and then the attendees on the call started talking over me saying "has he frozen?".
I had to turn off webcam and turn off incoming video to be in with a chance of my Macbook not being completely unusable and the attendees being able to see the content and hear me.
Many thanks!

Sam Cosby well that’s exciting. But I think I speak for
most mac users when I say, we hope it’s significant on both apple silicon and intel. Looking forward to further info.
- saidtsCopper ContributorThere's a lot of threads about this issue. Microsoft just don't care about Mac users
See this one, from April, 2020:

I'm using Microsoft Teams Version 1.5.00.11157.
- Tomislav BronzinCopper ContributorI am using Teams on M1 Max, 32 GB RAM, MacBook Pro 16", 2021 and Teams Client is working fine for me. The only problem I have is with tenant switching :-), but this is "old story" 🙂
- NilsSovantaCopper Contributor
It seems like MS released a new beta version of the teams client: https://9to5mac.com/2022/04/25/microsoft-teams-apple-silicon-mac/
I installed it and so far it is looking very promising. Way less lag and CPU usage.
- rbryntesonCopper ContributorBe careful as the above is a leaked version from an internal build. Just make sure you are getting it from a Microsoft server (which is out there but I'm not linking to).
- AphonicnoiseBrass ContributorAvoid it, it’s significantly broken.

Microsoft
Hi everyone. Recently, some sites have published articles about a Microsoft Teams Beta release of a Universal Binary application that runs natively on both M1 and Intel based processors. The information in these articles is inaccurate, and articles have no backing from Microsoft. In the articles, there are links to builds on our CDN that are for internal use only. We are working on delivering a Universal Binary offering of Teams and the CDN link in these articles does contain a downloadable version. However, we discourage users from trying this version(and all other versions that do not come from official Microsoft distribution channels), as it is still in the early phases of testing, fixing, and validation.
We understand that our users are eager for a native M1 build, and we are excited to make it a reality in the near future, but we ask that users please not use these unvalidated, unsupported versions.
Thanks,
Sam
Microsoft Teams Engineering, Product Manager- NilsSovantaCopper ContributorHi Sam,
thank you for this explanation. Yesterday the beta was working fine on my machine but it is a way different story today. It is totally unresponsive and I will switch back to the not working stable version.
NilsSovanta My understanding is that this will make a big difference to M1 based Macs, finally moving to a universal app rather than working through Rosetta. It's still based on Electron, that will change in the future, but this should give relief to the performance on M1 Mac.

StevenC365 I wouldn't mark this as a solution as its only a beta. i've got it installed at its made little to no difference.
- shinkashiCopper ContributorHello, I tired cleaning old cache files (as follow) and it really improved the performance. I'm using MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018) - i9 processor, and had been suffering from high CPU usage (load average ~50) whenever I use video/screen sharing on Teams - 100% reproducible.
After trying the following procedure, I rarely had issues. There were a few occasional heavy CPU utilising situation but it only lasts for a few minutes. Worth trying..
https://td.unh.edu/TDClient/60/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=2197
1. Quit Microsoft Teams.
2. Delete files in following folders.
“~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Application Cache/Cache”
“~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/blob_storage”
“~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Cache”
“~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/databases”
“~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/GPUCache”
“~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/IndexedDB”
“~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Local Storage”
“~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/tmp”
3. Restart Microsoft Teams.- SunilNagavelliCopper ContributorI have tried this many times shinkashi, this works for the first few mins or maybe a couple of hours, but later this thing happens again.
- NZPACMANBrass ContributorI have another problem with Teams. I deal with a number of companies and don't have a logon with any of them. I have a private logon with MS and therefore private account with Teams. If I log onto Teams I can not actually join any company meetings. Teams will just not join. I discovered this on a Surface Pro. Could not rouble shoot. Went back to my Mac and discovered it was not signed into MS or to Teams. Joins meetings just fine. So signed the Surface out and voila the Surface now joins Teams meetings too. MS make everything complicated. Tell It to allow Zoom.
