Files that have Track Changes on will only open read only in app??

Does anyone know how to open a file from Teams, that has track changes on it, in edit mode??  

A colleague has reported that they have files that they/colleagues need to edit.  But having track changes on stops the file opening in edit mode in the desktop app.  They do not want track changes turned off in order to open in edit mode.  They prefer to open the file from Teams and edit on desktop as online / Teams doesn't have all the functionality of word/excel.

Any ideas??
