Copilot unavailable for other Outlook accounts and Defender won’t activate after Windows repair
Hello,
I am posting here because Microsoft Chat Support directed me to the Tech Community after previously escalated support cases failed to resolve two issues with my Microsoft 365 subscription:
- Copilot works with my Microsoft account in New Outlook, but is unavailable when using other accounts within the same application.
- The Microsoft Defender app will not activate on my computer.
To be clear, Copilot is not completely unavailable: it works with my Microsoft account. The unresolved issue concerns its availability for the other accounts added to New Outlook.
Troubleshooting and support history
I have already worked with Microsoft Support, including the Escalation Team. At their direction, I completed a repair installation of Windows 11. Both issues remain unchanged.
In my latest chat, the support representative reviewed the case history and explicitly confirmed that all applicable troubleshooting steps had already been performed, including the Windows repair installation.
Despite this, I was repeatedly directed to this forum. My requests to reconnect with the Escalation Team or continue the existing investigation were not accommodated.
What I need clarified and investigated
I suspect there may be an account-side subscription or entitlement issue, but this has not been confirmed. I need someone to establish the actual cause rather than repeat troubleshooting that has already failed.
Specifically:
- Is Copilot supposed to be available for the additional accounts in New Outlook under my subscription? If there are restrictions, please identify exactly which subscription requirements or account limitations apply.
- Why will the Microsoft Defender app not activate, and can Microsoft verify whether the relevant subscription entitlement is correctly associated with my account?
- If an account-side investigation is required, how can my existing case be returned to the appropriate Microsoft support team?
If these two symptoms have separate causes, please address them separately.
I understand that community contributors cannot access my private account or internal support records. If the investigation requires that access, I need a clear route to a Microsoft team that can take ownership. I can provide my existing case reference through an appropriate private support channel.
After completing an operating system repair at Microsoft’s request, I am understandably frustrated to be redirected to a public forum without a resolution or a clear escalation path. I am paying for this subscription and expect a concrete explanation of what should work, what is failing, and how it will be resolved.
Please help me move this investigation forward without restarting the same troubleshooting cycle.
Thank you,
Christer F

Hi sapanpatel,
Thank you for your reply. However, your statement that one account’s Copilot entitlement does not automatically extend to other accounts in New Outlook appears to contradict Microsoft’s own documentation:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/sharing-copilot-in-outlook
Under “Microsoft accounts with a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium or Pro subscription”, Microsoft explains that signing into Outlook with an eligible subscription account makes Copilot available across the other connected email accounts on the same device, including third-party providers such as Gmail.
I am the Microsoft 365 Family subscription owner. Copilot works for my Microsoft account in New Outlook, but the Copilot button and AI features are unavailable when I switch to my Gmail or IMAP accounts within that same application.
When you suggest verifying the subscription associated with each account, do you mean that I must use my five Family sharing slots to share my subscription with my own additional email addresses? That seems unreasonable, since those slots are intended for sharing with other people, primarily family members. The same documentation also explicitly says that sharing a Family subscription does not give those other people access to Copilot.
Could you clarify how your advice aligns with the functionality Microsoft describes, and whether there is a documented exception relevant to my setup?
Regarding Defender and escalation, Microsoft Support has already reviewed my case history and redirected me here after previous escalation attempts. Asking me to return to the same support route without explaining how to obtain the account-level investigation leaves me in the same loop. If you know a specific route to the team that can investigate these entitlements, please provide it.
Kind regards,

Hi Christer,
Since you have already completed the Windows repair and worked with Microsoft Support, I recommend focusing on verifying the account entitlements for both issues.
Copilot in New Outlook:
Copilot availability depends on the account type, subscription entitlement, and supported features. Having multiple accounts in Outlook does not automatically extend one account's Copilot entitlement to the others. Please verify the subscription associated with each account.Microsoft Defender:
Check whether your subscription includes the relevant Defender benefits and whether you are signed into the Defender app using the account associated with that subscription. If the entitlement is correct but activation still fails, Microsoft Support may need to investigate the account and activation status.Next steps:
Reply to your existing support case and request an entitlement review for Copilot and Defender separately. Ask the support team to review the existing investigation rather than repeating the Windows troubleshooting you have already completed.Community contributors cannot access private account or support records, so Microsoft Support will need to verify the entitlement and activation details.
I hope this helps. If this response is useful, please like it.
