temporarily block a user's mailbox

Hello everyone,

Is there a way to temporarily block a user's mailbox without blocking his account?

I use M365 business Premium in combination with AD.

  • Block it how exactly? Do you want to prevent him from accessing existing items in the mailbox? Or limit sending/receiving messages?

      Hi Vasil,

Thank you very much for your response.

Rather limiting (or completely blocking) sending and receiving.

This in a way that he can still log in and read existing emails. Also log in to his AD account.

      • The best way to restrict sending/receiving is via a mail flow rule. You can also play with the -MaxSendSize/-MaxReceiveSize parameters, but mail flow rules give you a lot more flexibility, so they would be my preferred solution.

    1. Go to the Exchange admin center
    2. In the Exchange admin center, navigate to Recipients > Mailboxes
    3. Double-click the user and go to the Mailbox features page. Under Mobile Devices, select Disable

    4. Exchange ActiveSync and Disable OWA for Devices, and answer Yes to both when prompted
    5. Under Email Connectivity, select Disable and answer Yes when prompted
