Office Online: Versioning + Undo
I've been running training recently on Office Online - Word Online, Excel Online and PowerPoint Online.
A couple of questions I've had I'm keen to clarify:
How often does versioning of documents happen with auto-saving. If i keep working on a document in Word Online, how often will it create a new version? Is this the same in each tool - i.e. Word, Excel and PowerPoint Online? Can this be changed? Is it different in SharePoint to OneDrive?
How many undo steps are available i.e. How many times can I keep pressing undo? Is this the same in each tool?
Is there any interrelationship between the two?
Some more detail.
- Word, PowerPoint, and Excel use the same approach to autosave.
- You can use registry settings to disable autosave for one or all of the desktop applications, but I don't think this is possible for the online apps.
- The online apps seem to save new versions in the same way as the desktop apps do. This makes sense as it wouldn't be good to have different behaviors for the same functionality.
https://support.office.com/en-ie/article/Using-Office-Online-in-OneDrive-dc62cfd4-120f-4dc8-b3a6-7aec6c26b55d says that the saves happen automatically. If you look at the version history of documents you can find out how often new versions are created. I did this in https://www.petri.com/autosave-office-documents when I looked at how the autosave feature works in the desktop versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. I assume that much the same mechanism is used.
