Choosing to 'Edit in Word' from Office App, get 'you'll need a new app' error

Hello all,

Hopefully this isn't too dim a question, but I've tried searching and I can't find any solutions.

We've just rolled-out Office 365 and Office 2016. It's been mostly bloodless. Mostly.

One user has an error I can't resolve. He clicks on a .docx in Office 365 (Edge browser). The file opens in the Word Online App. He chooses 'Edit in Word' and the first message he gets is 'You'll need a new app to open this ms-word' (see picture attached). After a second or two Word does open and he can edit the file, but the error stays and he has to get rid each time (as well as another prompt telling him the files has now opened). Obviously it's not a disaster, but any idea how to get rid of this annoying box? I've checked program defaults and that seems fine.

Any help appreciated!

Paul

  • Have you checked that Word 2016 is correctly associated?

See the following screenshot (in Italian - sorry...):

This was exactly the same issue I had. Association with Excel and Powerpoint was fine, but no association with word.

      Thanks for the pointers!

Thanks Salvatore Biscari, thanks Pieter Veenstra. You both put me on the right line. I logged in as the user on my own PC and didn't get the same error. I then checked the file associations (I'd done this but via a different screen) and the user didn't even have the ms-word setting there. So I performed the Quick Repair on Office 365 on his PC, problem solved. I should have thought of it sooner. Thanks for the suggestions!

  • My guess is that this is not jsut this user but more likely the PC he/she is using.

Most likely this user cannot install something. Is this user an administrator on this PC? Does this work if you make this user an administrator?

Does it work for this user on a different PC?

Does it work if you logon to this PC with an admin account?
