Thanks Salvatore Biscari, thanks Pieter Veenstra. You both put me on the right line. I logged in as the user on my own PC and didn't get the same error. I then checked the file associations (I'd done this but via a different screen) and the user didn't even have the ms-word setting there. So I performed the Quick Repair on Office 365 on his PC, problem solved. I should have thought of it sooner. Thanks for the suggestions!
