Adding additional domain to Office365 changes UPN for default domain
I have had a strange situation occur. I have added a second domain to my Office365 account and as a result it has changed the UPNs for my default AD-synced users from user@domain.com to user@domain.onmicrosoft.com.
To provide some additional background:
- I synchronise my on-premise active directory with Office365. An IT services provider set it up and didnt do a great job. It is a bit half done it seems. I'm not sure if that is related. As a result every time I create a new user in AD, I need to create a mailbox in Office365 and change the UPN via PowerShell AND active directory and email passwords are NOT synched
- My default domain in Office365 is in the status "Setup in progress". We have been an Office365 customer for many many years and it has always been in this state
Anyway I'm not sure how those two matters would affect this situation. The interesting thing is that I cannot 'finish' the domain set up for the new/additional domain. It gives me an error "Failed to save your service selection, close your browser and try again."
I have solved this by changing the UPNs for each user back again via the powershell command "Set-MsolUserPrincipalName"
Any clues as to how I can finish adding my domain?

We have pretty much the same issue here:
There's a bit more info on there if anyone does have any ideas on resolving it, I'd love to hear it.

Agree this is an issue ;-)
Everything remains stable until you need to bring in and verify a new domain into the tenant.
This has to be a bug, and one that MS don't seem to be able to acknowledge.

Good to know. Now that you have verified domain, are you able to setup the default domain? Does this solve the issue?
The "finish" process basically means going over the annoying wizard that insist that your DNS records should be configured exactly as shown, which might not be possible (or even a good idea) in all scenarios. But the error you are getting hints to something wrong on the backend as well, so make sure to open a support case to get this properly investigated.

I just clicked finish and it is all good now saying "setup complete', That doesnt explain why my UPNs changed. Perhaps a mystery that'll never be solved....
