Favicons for bookmarks broken since Edge v149 update
I've recently had Edge update to the v149.0.4022.52 stable-channel releases, and ALL my bookmarks now have no favicons.
When I visit any webpage, Edge successfully loads the favicon for the tab of that website.
But when I visit a bookmark, the favicon doesn't get updated after it has loaded for the site.
And new bookmarks I add also don't show a favicon.
If I go into my Edge profile-folder (which can found via edge://profile-internals/ , clicking the heading, then looking next to "Profile Path"), then it is still creating the "Favicon" and "Favicons-journal" files, but I assume isn't populating them with anything?
I've tried deleting both files, restarting my PC, but even after Edge recreates them, no bookmarks are gaining any favicons.
Is anyone else getting this issue...?

π£ Update, 26 June 2026:
β As of the latest 149.0.4022.98 update, the missing bookmark icons remains unfixed. Continue to set Edge not to clear your "browsing history" whenever you close it as the workaround.
β As of the 149.0.4022.80 update, these issues were resolved:
β’ "Create QR code for this page" feature works again
β’ "Browsing history" in the "Clear browsing data" menu isn't always stuck on "Calculating..."β As of the 149.0.4022.62 update, these issues were resolved:
β’ moving the mouse-pointer to the top of the screen when Edge is in full-screen mode once-again shows the tabs, and URL bar, and you can use the double-arrow icon to exit full-screen mode;
β’ when users saved files to network-locations (\\server\share\folder), Edge would not open either the downloaded files, or the folder they were saved into; online reports said the .62 update fixed this - appproCopper Contributor
Hi
now 3rd attempt to post here. none of the posts show.
anyway. I updated to .80. turned on Browsing clear. closed and opened. the Calculating feature was still locked. up. I closed things down and came back 2 hours later and ALL my favicons are GONE again. and calculating is still calculating.
This .80 update is back to the future.

Me too. I have also lost my string of icons. It is really annoying. I have tried both Claude and ChatGPT for solutions without success. Has anyone been able to get their favicons reinstated following this problematic update from Microsoft? I would be grateful for the steps to take. I am not that PC literate at age 66!

Yes is is happening to me, new page new favourite the favicon does not appear. I give it enough time. Seems to have happened since last microsoft update. I am not great in computer terms can anyone let microsoft know that this is happening. Thanks

I had 4 persons from support they tried to fix the issue, but each person made it worse. They had no clue hope its fixed soon!

Yes but that post to UNcheck Browsing History ON CLOSE seems to work for now. sooner to later they will fix it. in the meantime once a week clear your history manually.

yeah me too, but my started after a HUGE Windows 11 security update AND Edge so I don't know which is to blame. All I do know is that making Edge users go crazy trying to fix this is just ANOTHE microsoft disgrace. Been there done that.
We need a fix and an acknowledgment that this is NOT US.
And you may notice that the favcon's still exist on your Favorites bar. If you add a NEW Fav there it will work. If you try to add the same favcon to your Start Menu or Taskbar - IT DOES NOT WORK. - no icon.
THIS IS NOT US

π¨ Update: workaround for the favicon issue
After testing, it seems in Edge v149 if you have "browsing history" set to clear each time you exit Edge, this is what causes the favicons to not appear, and also for some existing bookmarks to lose theirs.
To check, go to Menu > Settings > Privacy, search and services > Clear browsing data > "Choose what to clear every time you close the browser" (or enter edge://settings/privacy/clearBrowsingData/clearOnClose in the URL bar, then hit enter to go straight there).
If "browsing history" is enabled there, turn it off (the dot should be on the left) and favicons should then start working. If not, you may need to either (1) close Edge, and delete your current "Favicons" and "Favicons-journal" files, then reboot or (2) create a new profile in Edge (which means having to export your passwords, bookmarks, saved addresses and save payment cards, then reimport them π¬).
Hopefully Microsoft can get this sorted, either by restoring the pre-v149 behaviour, or by adding a new "keep favicons when clearing browsing history" option, as currently the workaround means having to keep your browsing history recorded. However, you can clear this (from the Edge menu, click "Clear browsing data" and then set time-range to "All time" and make sure "Browsing history" is checked; it's up to you if you wish to check any other options there), and from my testing, the favicons do not disappear. It is only if you ask Edge to clear the browsing history when you exit the browser that causes the issue.
π‘ To find where your Edge profile is located, type edge://profile-internals/ in the URL bar, then press ENTER. Then click on the "Default" or "Profile 1" heading, then look next to "Profile path". In that folder is where you should find the "favicons" and "favicons-journal" files you can delete. Make sure Edge is fully-closed first, and I'd also suggest doing a reboot after deleting them.
π‘ If you have more than one profile, tap the profile icon in the top-right to see which you're currently using.

This makes sense. After they all disappeared the other day, they began to come back after I opened a saved website. Last night I needed to do a reimage of the OS drive so I closed Edge and all other apps. this morning all the favicons were gone again. I had Edge clear history on shutdown. I turned that off as above and the icons that were populated yesterday reappeared. Go figure.

I have already created a new profile and tried deleting the favicons and favicon-journal files, neither of those options work from my testing. I do have "clear browsing history on exit" enabled and changing that so far seems to be the culprit (great find), will need some time to test as before I would get icons for a majority then after opening a few tabs, over time they would slowly start disappearing, but so far looks promising.
Sad they cannot even introduce a new semi-useless feature (show icon only) without breaking something, I guess QA is a thing of the past and we are all just beta testers now.
Update: After 4 hours of solid usage no icons have disappeared, I did have to visit some sites again to repair the icons (YouTube, Amazon) but so far they all are sticking, so it does look like the clear browsing history on close is the cause.
Again, thanks to dftf-wip for all your testing and updating of the issue it is greatly appreciated.

I've learned a long time ago (this includes Intel too) that Microsoft does these mess ups...
They don't tell anyone
People (including me) go crazy trying to fix something on their machine that IS NOT BROKEN.
People (including me) just make things worse.
Someone finally on a chat board comes up with a temporary fix.
People keep posting insane fixes that rarely work.
Finally after days/weeks/never Windows tells us it is a "known" issue and they will fix it - sooner or later
- but we never known when.
dftf posted to just turn off Clear Browsing on close. after a close and reboot edge - THAT WORKS.
imo JUST DO THAT and wait for Microsoft to fix edge.
UGH

Just had an update to Edge, and it's now on version 149.0.4022.62, and the missing favicon issue is still present.
These are also other known-issues with the v149 release:
Cannot open files saved on a network-path: if you download a file directly to a network location (\\server\sharename\folder-path) then Edge errors when you try to open the file, or open that folder
Create QR code for this page not working: after clicking that option on the right-click menu of any webpage, nothing happens
History cannot be cleared: when you bring up the "Clear browsing data" dialog, the "Browsing history" item at the top is stuck on "Calculating..." and never completes
History not showing all entries: people report their history is only showing a few days or a week's worth of sites, not the number of days it is set to record for
Tracking Protection in "balanced" mode may not be as effective as v148 and earlier: some reports of users claiming Edge v148 seemed to block more ads and trackers (though the "strict" setting seems unaffected)
Window controls no-longer accessible in full-screen mode: it used to be possible to move the mouse pointer to the top of the screen when Edge is in full-screen and use the "restore" control to exit; now the window controls never show, so only pressing ESC twice, or F11 once, can exit full-screen
Not-sure if Microsoft switched to vibe-coding for this v149 release, but it does seem rather buggy...

Workaround provided by "glasskuter" in win11 forums, I tested this and it has fixed the issue until MS programmers get a clue. What happened to QA?
https://www.elevenforum.com/t/favorites-icons-disappeared.47349/
On desktop create a shortcut with target of
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --disable-features=msEdgeFaviconService
May or may not work completely, most of my icons were restored, visiting sites with broken ones restored some but not all.
Follow up: After a couple hours icons started diappearing again from favs, so this does not work either.
