Introducing web capture for Microsoft Edge
Since the release of the new Microsoft Edge, we have heard a lot of feedback about missing the web notes tool that allowed you to capture and mark up content across the web. Frankly, we’ve missed it too! But first, we wanted to make it better. While web notes was a great feature, there was also room for improvement. Many of you reported using it for capturing quick screenshots to copy or share, while others loved the ability to to mark-up full webpages with scrolling. So, we designed the new screenshot feature, web capture, with this in mind and are excited to introduce the basic screen capture functionality to our Dev and Canary builds. In the near future, you can expect to see more functionalities added to web capture, like adding ink or highlights to your captures, capturing full webpages, and scrolling while marking them.
To try it out, use the Settings and more menu (...) in the top right corner of the browser and select Web capture.
When you open web capture, you can use the selection tool to capture just the content you want. We found that sometimes you want more than what you’re able to see on the webpage, so we have added the ability for you to select content lower down on the page. To do this, just hold down the selection tool and drag to the bottom of the page; the page will automatically start to scroll so that you can capture everything you need in one go.
Once you are done with the capture, you will see a menu with a couple of options: 'Copy' and 'Add notes'. Click Copy to add the image to your clipboard. It will then be available for you to paste into any application. If you want to mark up the screenshot with inking tools, select the Add notes option. You will see the image in a dialog box where you can draw on it, share, save and copy with your annotations.
If you love web capture and want to access the tool more quickly, you can pin it directly to your browser toolbar. Just right click on the option in the Settings and more menu (...) and select Show in toolbar. You can also use the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+S) to invoke web capture.
Try out the new tool and let us know what you think! We love hearing your feedback. From within Microsoft Edge, you can go to “…” menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback, or simply use the shortcut (Shift+Alt+I) to open the feedback tool.

- VFX_ProBrass ContributorI can't believe this feature isn't even capable of scrolling and capture a very long page (which is exactly the reason people use web screen grab in the first place). Back to using 3rd party add-ons 😞

Well... after restarting the latest update, I don't see the Web Capture command in the list as described in the "how to use it" details.
It doesn't say that I have to turn this on, I couldn't find any reference to Web Capture in the settings.
What happened?

Dingodes well I see this complaint from few of the comments. The feature is rolled out 100% to Canary and Dev through the server. Sometimes it takes a couple of browser restarts (closing all Edge instances) for the features to show up. But that did not work for someone. We are also going to enable it by default in the code and that will make sure everyone gets it. I hope that helps.

I wonder if this is the actual implementation of inking on web pages as promised in the Feedback summary - appreciate it if you can shed some light on the same. (Feedback summary mentions inking is planned for September).

SumitDhiman this is the first version of 'inking on web content' feature which we had in legacy Microsoft Edge. You can capture web content right now, inking support would be rolling in coming weeks. Got a bit delayed, so not exactly September but pretty close
. I hope that helps. - justwantinkingbackCopper Contributor
vygadekaany update on when Inking webpages is coming back? That little pen icon in the Legacy Edge version was insanely useful for doing live webdesign reviews with clients over Skype.

Yes, In HTML it was called Add Notes. Also, referred to as Inking. In Edge with PDFs it is termed Inking.
Has been requested forever & wonderful it's done. Anxious to have it in GA & with all its tools.- Spoiler

They mentioned in the original post:

this is just the start, more stuff are on the way

I am SO glad/happy this is back in the browser again:exclamation_mark: Although, I don't seem to have it, yet ☹ I am anxious for it to have all its tools AND for it to be in Edge GA:exclamation_mark: This was Add Notes in HTML & countless people wanted to still have it in Edge C so terrific news:exclamation_mark:👍👍😁 - F1HDITCopper Contributor

Is this another 'Controlled roll-out as I do not have it in the most recent Dev or Canary? The URL Paste I don't have YET, but we know that is not all, yet. Is Web Capture the same?
BTW, I am SO happy to see Web Capture back again:exclamation_mark: Anxious for its additional features/abilities. It is what HTML had that was called Add notes.- vygadeka

F1HDIT clarification on this - The feature should be available on latest Canary and Dev for everyone. If you don't see it, closing all Edge instances and opening Canary or Dev should fix it. Please let us know if it does not. Try a system restart also if it is not too much to ask for

vygadeka Obviously just an MVP but looking forward to having this built in rather than relying on a 3rd party tool. I realized that the screenshots show up in the clipboard of my (Samsung) phone, just like regular clipboard content, so that's handy. Would love to see a blur/pixelate pen to quickly remove sensitive info from screenshots - a few 3rd party tools have that. For now I use a fat black pen in Snip n Sketch, which works but is unattractive
For me these types of screenshots have a very different purpose than Sticky Notes or One Note, usually I'm pasting them into Powerpoint or Word, very rarely those other two. I rarely need to save the image itself as a jpg or png as it's usually going into another document for context, so cloud saving from the capture tool itself I don't care about (have an option to kick it over to Snip & Sketch maybe to do that?) But I can see others doing things differently. But I agree that aligning how the markup/modification tools work across the various products should be a focus.

Talisman39 thanks for the feedback. There are some useful suggestions like the blur pen which are definitely considered for future backlog for this feature.
- jessejjohnsonCopper ContributorThe simplicity of this is absolutely brilliant! The majority of time I just want to screenshot content to clipboard and very quickly - this does exactly that. Thank you!

This is helpful feature , it would be nice to have option like open Snipping Tools or Snip & Sketch tools and there we have some additional options for editing.
In addition, this could have same options as Snip & Sketch tools since it has similar requirements.

I agree - make it part of Snip & Sketch - why reinvent the wheel. The Share is a couple of extra unnecessary steps
- There are reasons for that:
Snip & Sketch isn't available on other OSes such as Linux and Mac which are target platforms for the new Microsoft Edge.
Snip & Sketch doesn't support taking screenshot of a web page while scrolling down which is super useful. Snip & Sketch only can take screenshot of that is displayed on the screen.
also if they bring back all the features from Edge legacy, there's gonna be sticky notes and ability to type on capture, none of which are available on Snip & Sketch.
so yeah that's enough reasons to develop this into Edge.
- Migue333Iron ContributorThere's a way to do that. There's a share button on the capture preview. Just share it to the snip & sketch app and done.
- That's a good point. actually, with this method I can save it to OneNote as well, think of it as OneNote integration that I was looking for. thanks 🙂
