Anybody knows what D365 BC - Embedded license is?
Like the title says, anybody any idea?
A customer of ours has Dynamics 365 Business Central Essentials - Embedded licenses in their tenant. Now we want to add a D365 Sales Professional attach license to these users, but the portal is blocking it, stating that the user needs a qualifying base license.
Of course D365 BC Essentials is a qualifying base license for Sales Pro, so it should work.
But apparently D365 BC Essentials - Embedded is something else and thus not eligible?
I can't find any specific information at all. I only get a single Google Bing hit when looking for "Dynamics 365 Business Central Essentials - Embedded" 😂
I also can't find this SKU in the price list, nor via webdirect. Maybe something EA? Though this customer does not have an EA.
Anybody any idea?
MartijnElfers this is what I heard back from the team:
- If you are an indirect reseller we recommend going to your Indirect Provider for licensing questions.
- If this is a question around ISV Cloud embed you can find information here: Microsoft Power Platform Partner Hub

If this customer bought these licenses from an ISV as part of an industry solution that ISV is part of ISV Cloud Embed which gives them access to SKUs that TDSynnex wouldn't see. The customer cannot just "add" new products to those embed licenses working with TDSynnex because TDSynnex is not an ISV in this program.
I am just relaying what was shared with me, so if this doesn't make sense, let me know. This is not my area of expertise. 🙂

MartijnElfers Hi Martijn, who did they buy this from? I think I know what this is.

MartijnElfers I dealt with embedded licensing back in Dynamics NAV days. It's an old way of doing licensing and I thought it was gone for good. It's when you had to buy NAV and an ISV add-on together, in a bundle. There was no way to simply buy the add-on and add it to an existing NAV licence. You had to get NAV with the embedded add-on from the ISV provider. I only ever came across one ISV provider doing this. I never liked this model because you were forced to buy everything from the ISV provider. If a customer really needed that specific add-on, and they already had NAV, they had to cancel their NAV licence and buy a new NAV licence + add-on from the ISV provider. If this model is still alive, then it looks like your customer has to go back to the original provider for additional licensing.

Now that you mention it, I do remember the 'Embedded' license model with NAV indeed. Also didn't like that model 😛
I'm not sure how and with who they purchased this license, as the customer doesn't remember it either... they do have an ISV, so I guess I'll need to contact them.
I did not expect this model to continue in the Cloud. It's atleast not part of the CSP program. So now I'm wondering how they purchased this.
Most importantly is; why is this D365 BC Essentials - Embedded license not a qualified base license for an attach license?
This would really block any customer using 'embedded' licenses to upsell to other D365 solutions with attach model.- JillArmourMicrosoftCommunity Manager

Thanks JillArmourMicrosoft! Looking into the program and reading the options and capabilities there, I can see that Embedded licenses are indeed a discounted SKU. Thus this would most probably be the reason why you can't just add a normal SKU as an attach to it (as the base pricing is set differently).
I also read that Sales Pro is not part of this program and thus not available as an Embedded SKU to attach to the BC Essentials Embedded license.
Seems that the customer has bad luck with this setup. Purchasing D365 BC Essentials Embedded does give them a discount for that SKU, but now they can't attach Sales Pro to their environment so they need to purchase that SKU for the full price now.
This would probably be more expensive than to purchasing normal BC Essentials with Sales Pro attach.
