Language defaults audit for everything M365

We are struggling to find where and how the wrong language is being used for various parts of the M365 platform.

We have Swedish set as default, but still English is used for a number of places which often are only realized as a consequence by a user.

For example, in Viva Engage language is set to Swedish, and for the SharePoint as well. But:

  • When a new user logs on VE is in English
  • While the SharePoint web part is in Swedish, the link text have for some time ended with "- Home" (English) instead of as it was when we started 2+ years ago " - Startsida" (Swedish)
  • Then when creating a VE group Event (Teams-meeting) default language is also English

Tracking down what and where is making the wrong language being used is hard.

I would be very grateful if pointed to a resource that give an as complete as possible overview of everything in M365 that we need to look over for making sure that the correct language is default everywhere it should be.

    I did a video about how to change the major SharePoint language settings a year ago.  If it's not one of those, you can message me I could try to help diagnose the issue.

    For Teams meetings, it's a bit more complicated.  The notification depends on the language of the M365 group, which depends on the settings of the user who created it.  You can override that with
    Set-CsTeamsMeetingPolicy -Identity "Global" -MeetingInviteLanguages "sv-SE"

    Below the key areas to audit for Language Settings in M365:

    1. Microsoft 365 Admin Center
    • Tenant-wide language defaults: Set the default language for new users and services.
    • User provisioning templates: Ensure language is correctly set when new accounts are created.
    1. User Profile Settings
    • Each user can set their own language preferences in:
      • Microsoft Account settings
      • Office.com settings
      • SharePoint profile
      • Teams settings
      • Viva Engage (Yammer) profile
    1. SharePoint Site Settings
    • Site language and regional settings
    • Web part configurations: Some titles or labels may need manual updates.
    • Navigation and link text: These can be cached or manually set, which might explain the lingering “- Home” label.
    1. Viva Engage (Yammer)
    • Language is tied to the user’s profile settings, not just the tenant.
    • New users may default to English if their browser or M365 profile is set to English.
    1. Teams & Outlook Events
    • The default language for meeting invites and calendar events often follows the organizer’s language settings, not the group or tenant.
    1. Language Accessory Packs
    • For Office apps, you may need to install Language Accessory Packs to fully localize menus, proofing tools, and help content.
