Major problem with Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5043145)

Copper Contributor

I installed 2024-09 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5043145) on two computers today. On the higher end one it's fine, but on the other computer (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B17LZ4GD?th=1) after installing the update, the computer reboots to the login screen, whereupon the USB ports all seem to stop working. They still get power it seems, but the USB-connected biometric fingerprint scanner won't work, the keyboard won't work, and the mouse won't work. Changing USB ports does nothing. As a result, it is impossible to login or interact with the computer further without shutting it down and going into recovery mode. After removing the update, the computer returns to normal operation. To see what would happen, I tried installing the update again... and exact same problem recurred. I have to go into recovery mode now to fix it.

@Jack_Hammer2000 Same problem here!

Update KB5043145 was installed after which the USB completely stopped working. No mouse, keyboard, bluetooth! No way of giving any input to the computer.

In device manager it shows under Universal Serial Bus Controllers:

USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller with an error yellow exclamation mark and the error:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)
An invalid parameter was passed to a service or function.

Trying to update the drivers does not work. Reinstalling Intel Chipset drivers also had no effect.

Luckily I have a remote desktop program installed so I can still control the computer.

How do I roll-back this update and uninstall KB5043145 ?

EDIT: Update a little later ....

uninstalled KB5043145 from Start  > Settings  > Windows Update  > Update history  > Uninstall updates

and USB and bluetooth are working again!

So Microsoft, fix this issue please!

A second PC (same specs) had the same issue after I executed the same update, so that ruled out a hardware issue for me.

Also posted about this, including screenshots, here: KB5043145 update breaks USB – My Brain BLOG

This update messed up the USB driver (yellow triangle, code 10 on PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4DED&CC_0C03 or PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4DED&SUBSYS_201F1043&REV_01) for me too in result of which my keyboard (and touchpad) on the ASUS Vivobook Slate T3300KA stopped working. USB driver was unfixable. Had to uninstall the update from WinRE.
After Windows Update KB5043145 was installed, all USB devices, including mouse, keyboard, and Bluetooth, stopped working. In Device Manager, the USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller showed a yellow exclamation mark with the error: 'This device cannot start. (Code 10) An invalid parameter was passed to a service or function.' Rolling back the update fixed the issue, restoring USB and Bluetooth functionality. Updating drivers and reinstalling the Intel Chipset drivers did not resolve the issue prior to uninstalling the update.

I do not have a problem with the usb ports, as I cannot get into my laptop to find out. The problem I have with this up date, is that after rebooting, the laptop freezes up on 30%, and nothing  at all is happening.

Start button with control button pressed down, got my laptop working again. Have now paused this update for 2 weeks.

I had the same thing yesterday downloaded the windows update KB5043145 - Then after restart could not use my USB mouse stopped working, managed to get the touchpad working then uninstalled the update. I would off thought Windows would have tested this update before pushing the thing out, very unprofessional.

My computer is Inter(R) Celeron (R) N5095A - Windows 11 Home Ver 23H2

sent a message out to windows but nothing came back !

Same here. USBs and bluetooth does't work. How can I uninstall this update? I have a mele quieter 3c minipc and the update doesn't appear in the list to uninstall. I can't uninstall it.

@jorgapa Same issue after update, same PC (mele quieter 3c ). Go into windows update and "history of updates" scroll all the way down to "uninstall updates" then you can uninstall the kB5043145.

I reverted back and now the USB xHCL controller is back working.

Don`t forget to "pause" update for few weeks (from the win update panel)

@ValentinoM  Thank you, I solved it with the instructions.

Ok question, How do you stop the update from reinstalling it after you have uninstalled it? Because yesterday I uninstalled it on my pc and this morning it's trying to reinstall it and will if I restart my pc.

@frogflower

On the Windows update page,  look for PAUSE UPDATES.  Choose a date, and this pause any updates.

@P_Dmentions Ok I will do that. Any idea if it will be fixed before it tries to reinstall again when the time is up? I don't want to pause every update that may be important.

Microsoft knows there are problems with this update, and are looking into it. I am going to try and do an update next Tuesday 8th October, when Microsoft will be rolling out updates.
Ok, Thank you very much! Have a good day!

I had the same issue. My one-month-old Dell laptop became unusable due to repeated blue screens. I was finally able to pause updates and also turn off the option of "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available". I of course am not going to choose the "Download & install" button for this update...

So far so good. Fingers crossed, it's been about 15 minutes and the laptop is still alive. 🙂

In one of the on line updates that I subscribe to, it was suggested that Microsoft had sorted out the problem, so I tried the update again. Hey Presto, the update worked. After I got the update sorted, I then went on to get windows 11 24H2, through the windows 11 installation assistant.
I have same problem.

@P_Dmentions Thank you. I will give it another shot today.
