MSIX and app attach made easy
Event details
Join us for a deep dive into MSIX and app attach! We will show you the myriad of enhancements we have made to app attach from creating the app attach disk image to configuring and updating it. We will also talk about MSIX: why is it important and how we are making it easier for IT pros to convert apps and for developers to create MSIX apps. As a bonus, we will also talk about App-V to App Attach migration!
This session is part of the Microsoft Technical Takeoff: Windows + Intune. Add it to your calendar, RSVP for event reminders, and post your questions and comments below! This session will also be recorded and available on demand shortly after conclusion of the live event. |

- GrahamGBIron ContributorThe recent update including the MSI Fixups is a good step in the right direction and will let newer users adopt the concepts better than trawling over the documentation and config.json files, but what plans are there to keep it up to date and current in relation to supplemental tools that are managing the PSF automation already and include newer fixups that cover more resolutions? The lack of used case scenarios explaining when and where fixups would be used would greatly benefit people via the MSIX Community Blog...

Thank you for the feedback. We will look for avenues to publish additional usecases on PSF fixups via the tech community
- GrahamGBIron ContributorAgree with Jay Michaud about the desktop shortcuts, I don't see what we would want to advocate this as most enterprise desktop engineers would look to mitigate these being part of the packaged solution and let a user create it if they require it.

Microsoft
The provision to create Desktop Shortcuts is not a mandate but is an available option provided for those who wish to use it. When using the MSIX Packaging tool for converting an old application, IT administrators are given the option to configure the shortcut post MSIX conversion, if the original application had one present. - GrahamGBIron ContributorLooking at this further, is this more related to the fact that users can't right click MSIX created start menu shortcuts to save to the desktop any longer if they tried to navigate to the location of the start-menu or physical file and 'Send to Desktop'?
- Sushant_BansalBrass ContributorHi folks! As mentioned during the session - I am also adding link to the blog which has more details of all the things we have been working on! :D https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-it-pro-blog/what-s-new-in-msix-november-2023/ba-p/3996401

Thanks for joining us! We hope you enjoyed this session. If you missed the live broadcast, don’t worry – you can watch it on demand. And we’ll continue to answer questions here in the chat through the end of the week. There's more great content in store at the Microsoft Technical Takeoff! What do you like about the event so far? Share your feedback and help shape the direction of future events on the Tech Community!
- Jay MichaudIron ContributorPlease cancel your planned "Desktop Shortcuts" feature. The desktop belongs to the user, not app developers. If the user wants a desktop shortcut, he or she can create it himself/herself.
- Fiza_Azmi
Microsoft
The current implementation in the MSIX Packaging Tool does not enforce Desktop Shortcut creation. Rather, it aims to provide flexibility to Developers and IT Professionals who wish to ensure a consistent end-user experience post application conversion. The features will be optimized further as we continue supporting an open platform that empowers app developers to achieve more. We thank you for all the feedback and encourage you to stay engaged with us through the tech community. - Frank260Copper ContributorIt is more important that the user can create the shortcut himself/herself. This isn't very easy for a normal user like you see in this thread https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/msix/user-can-not-create-desktop-shortcut/m-p/3998633
- trententtyeCopper ContributorJim, you mentioned that you can run multiple versions of applications on the same box. Is this like AppV where you could have multiple packages of differing versions and they all work? Or is the scenario you described for updating an existing package?
- JimMoyle
Microsoft
You can run multiple versions on a single machine in different sessions.
- trententtyeCopper ContributorCan you run multiple versions on a single machine in the same session?
- Jay MichaudIron Contributor
Can you explain the technical difference between AppX and MSIX packages, or provide a link to documentation? I know that MSIX is the successor, but are some apps still packaged as AppX?
- Naveen_Nooka
Microsoft
AppX is a file format for Universal Windows Apps. MSIX is a successor for AppX files which builds on top of UWP platform and supports additional flexibility.

Welcome to MSIX and app attach made easy and the second annual Microsoft Technical Takeoff for Windows + Intune! Have a question? Post here in the Comments so we can help. Let’s make this an active Q&A!
- CraigDKIron Contributor
What parity rate are Microsoft aiming for, both in terms of conversion of existing App-V apps to MSIX and production of brand new MSIX apps in comparison to current success rates with App-V? We've noted a delta and whilst MSIX is catching up, especially under Windows 11, will it catch up enough to give organisations sufficient time fully migrate off App-V by it's EOL date in 2026 thus avoiding reliance on 3rd party vendor packaging fallback solutions.
- Naveen_Nooka
Microsoft
Most App-V 5.1 packages should automatically convert to MSIX. There will be some rework in the conversion when the App-V package is customized but that varies in a case to case basis. MSIX and PSF allow enterprises to increase the conversion rate and we continue to invest in tooling to make the process easier. The recent releases in MSIX Packaging tool - Package Analyzer, PSF-MPT Integration etc to name a few are efforts in this direction. Read more about new features here - https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-it-pro-blog/what-s-new-in-msix-november-2023/ba-p/3996401. Also, we continue to take feedback from users on perceived and real gaps and would love for you to engaged with us through the tech community or through feedback hub and provide your inputs.
