Copper Contributor

Hi everyone,

I hope you're doing well! I'm looking for some assistance on converting JPG images to ICON format on my Windows 11 PC. I need to create custom icons for a project, but I'm not sure of the best tools or methods to accomplish this.

If anyone has experience with this conversion or knows of any free software or online tools that can safely convert jpg to icon on Windows 11, I would greatly appreciate your recommendations. Additionally, any tips on maintaining image quality during the conversion process would be really helpful. Thanks in advance for your help!

Best,

Hudson

This reminds me of the first time I converted JPG images to ICON on my computer. First mistake I made was thinking any JPG images would just magically convert well to ICON. Not all images are equal! You want to start with a good quality JPG that isn't too compressed. Low-quality images can look pretty rough once converted, especially at small sizes. So pick images that are clear and high resolution.

@Hudsion The ICON image format, commonly known as .ico, is primarily utilized for creating and displaying icons in software applications, operating systems, and online environments. These icons serve as visual representations of programs, files, or actions, enhancing user experience by making it easier to identify and access different functionalities.

One of the advantages of the ICON format is its ability to support multiple resolutions and color depths within a single file. This means that developers can embed several versions of an icon—ranging from small sizes suitable for taskbars to larger sizes for high-DPI displays. As a result, the ICON format is especially valuable in applications that require clear and varied representations of their functions. This is the reason why people needs to convert JPG to ICON. However, the Photos app does not support this conversion currently.

Before converting, always keep a backup of your original JPG files. You don't want to lose that amazing pic just because you messed up during conversion. I've learned the hard way that it's better to be safe than sorry. Just drag your original files to a new folder or make a copy first.

If you're on Windows, you can use built-in tools to convert JPG images to ICON, like Paint for resizing and basic edits. After you've got your image ready, websites like ConvertIC0 or desktop applications like Ic0FX can handle the conversion seamlessly. Here's how to do it:

  • Open the JPG in Paint: Right-click your JPG, choose Open with > Paint.
  • Resize It: Go to the Resize button in the toolbar, crank it down to a typical icon size (like 256x256).
  • Save as PNG: Save your resized image as a PNG by going to File > Save as > PNG picture. Unfortunately, Paint can't save directly as ICON, but at least you have your image resized!
  • Convert the PNG to ICON: Now, use one of the online converters like ConvertIC0 to go from PNG to ICON.

@Hudsion  Unfortunately, you can not convert a .jpg image to .ico (ICON format) directly using the Photos app in Windows 11. The Photos app is primarily designed for viewing and basic editing of images, and it does not support saving or exporting images in the .ico format. To perform such a conversion, you would need to use dedicated software or online conversion tools that specifically handle the .ico format.

There are several alternatives you can use to convert jpg images to icon on Windows 11. Graphic design software allows you to create or save images in the .ico format. Additionally, there are many free online JPEG to ICON  converters where you can upload your .jpg file and download it as an .ico file.

@Hudsion If you don't want to install anything, there are also some great online converters. I've used ConvertIC0 before. Just Click the "Choose File" button to upload your JPG image. Just make sure the file isn't too huge or it won't upload. Hit the convert button! After a few seconds, it'll give you a link to download your new ICON file. About checking the quality, Just like with GlMP, make sure to open the ICON file and test it out.

There is a free and open-source command line tool (GM) for converting JPG to ICON on Windows PC. It is a software suite for image conversion and editing. It was created to address some performance and stability issues in Windows 11 and Windows 10 by providing a more efficient and robust tool for handling various image formats.

Here is a simple command to convert .jpg to .icon on Window 11 for free:

gm convert input.jpg output.ico

Also don't use the online JPG to ICON converters as they are not safe and take much more time for uploading and downloading!

If you use graphic design software or online converters to convert your JPG to ICON, you're relying on third-party tools that may not always produce the desired results. You may need to experiment with different settings or software to get the desired output.

When you convert a JPG image to an ICON, you're likely to lose some image quality. ICONs are typically low-resolution images, and JPGs are high-resolution images. This means that your original image may not look as sharp or vibrant after the conversion.
To convert jpg to icon, while GM is great for basic conversions, if you want to do any fancy stuff like resizing, adding effects, or advanced editing, you'll have to jump through more hoops or use additional tools. I often find myself needing to tweak images a bit before converting, and with GM, I had to go through extra steps.

If you're converting a lot of files, managing the input and output paths can get annoying. You have to be careful about where your files are going or it can get messy. I remember trying to batch convert a bunch of images and ended up with files scattered all over my folders—definitely a headache!
