SharePoint Online - Restores

Brass Contributor

I have gotten a document library restored from a backup. A server team did it for me through a software called VEEAM. The library restored ok but it has reshared any files that were previously shared.

Has anyone been through that? Is there a way to stop that or is it just part of a restore?

Hi @laceyk,

Yes, it can happen for SharePoint Online libraries to be restored with their previous sharing settings.

This is because the restore process restores the entire library, including all of its files and folders, as well as their sharing permissions.

There is no way to prevent this from happening, but there are a few things you can do after the restore to manage the sharing permissions of your library:

  1. Review the sharing permissions of your library. You can do this by clicking on the Share button in the top right corner of the library and then clicking on Manage permissions.
  2. Remove any unwanted users or groups from the sharing permissions.
  3. Change the sharing permissions to Only people with direct access can view and edit. This will prevent anyone who does not have explicit access to the library from viewing or editing its contents.

If you need to share the library with a large number of users or groups, you can consider using a SharePoint group or Microsoft 365 group. This will allow you to manage the sharing permissions of the library more easily.
