How SharePoint check in/out works... and when to use it

I'll probably get some hate for this, but I'm just not a big fan of using check in/out in SharePoint. I think it gets in the way of real collaboration, and does so in a nearly invisible way. But, I realize some people rely on it. So here is the everyday intro to how SharePoint check in/out works, the pitfalls it comes with, and when to use it.

A common pain.  In the SharePoint environment I support, there are very few end users who will manually check out documents. They just expect things to happen when they click on file links. For special purpose document libraries with more than two contributors (e.g. proposals, performance reviews), I help the site custodians enable/force checkout PLUS versioning to 5 or 10. copies.

Thanks.
