Does SharePoint Online not support SMS alerts?

I have a customer requesting us to enable SMS alerts in our SharePoint Online tenant. I did a quick Google search and came across https://office365.uservoice.com/forums/273492-sites-and-collaboration/suggestions/7644060-add-support-for-sms-in-sharepoint-online where the O365 team denied enabling SMS alerts, what seems like generally in O365. Can anyone confirm or deny that this is specific to SharePoint Online?

Ultimate question is can I enable and use SMS alerts in SharePoint Online?

  • According to this article, no, it does not - https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Configure-a-SharePoint-site-for-mobile-devices-ddf28727-3bfe-4b56-951d-c97204eac475?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US. "NOTE: If you are using SharePoint Online (as part of Office 365), choose E-mail. The SMS option is not available for Office 365."

AdamHarmetz, is this something that can be removed from the SPO UI please? it's causing some frustration both for admins and users alike.

There are several links/UI pieces like this that have not worked in SharePoint Online for years, by design.  I don't understand why these haven't been removed -- SMS options for alerts; audit log reports in a site; etc.

Well it's in the SharePoint Online Admin UI under Settings but that may not count for much
