Adding Columns to Share Point Site

Copper Contributor

Hi community!

Hope everyone is having a great start to their week. As I am on my journey to learn how to configure SharePoint and use it to our liking. I come across some head scratchers. I am having a difficulty understanding how I add certain columns and show actual output. I've attached a picture of what I'm trying to accomplish.

In short. I want to add an Author column that will display the persons name under author that uploaded it. How can I do that? I thought about making a Colum called Author which is easy enough but I'm not sure how to tie it to the column. Please help. Thank you! SharePoint Author Field.jpg

@Ziriux why not just display the created by column which will show who uploaded the document?

Solution

@Ziriux You can rename (change the display name) "Created By" column to "Author" by following below steps:

  1. Go to your SharePoint library where files will be uploaded
  2.  Click on Settings (gear) icon from top right corner and select Library settings --> More library settings
  3. From library settings page, scroll to the Columns section and click on Created By: ganeshsanap_0-1692782312792.png
  4. From column settings page, change column name to "Author" and click "OK" button to save the changes: ganeshsanap_1-1692782405561.png
  5. Now go back to the SharePoint library and you will see the Created By name is changed to Author: ganeshsanap_2-1692782486571.png

Fun Fact: The internal name of Created By column is Author by default in SharePoint.

@Rob_Elliott Because that isn't what the requester wants. They want it to say Author, some people are just particular while it's all the same to most of us. Thanks.

@Ziriux I don't understand what you're sayng. Just go to library settings and changethe name of the column from created by to author. It will then show that in the library.

I don't think I could be anymore specific about my request then I've already been. Ganeshsanap, knew exactly what I was asking for and provided me with the correct answer. Thanks Rob!

@Ziriux I have no idea why you are having a go at me. @ganeshsanap gave you the response you needed, why are you still going on about it to me?
