Dell Firmware Very Slow to Appear in Intune Driver Updates

Have an instance where the Dell 5520 latest firmware release (1.51.0 released 09/06/26) has still not appeared in the Intune Driver Updates which means we have vulnerable laptops in the field.

We do not utilise Dell Command update on the laptop to reduce the attack surface so do rely on Intune to deliver these updates in a timely manner.

I'm aware that it can take a little while for Dell releases to appear on the Microsoft side, but this is over 6 weeks now.

We have spoken to Dell Support, but they have deemed this a Microsoft problem. We then spoke to Microsoft Support, and it was deemed that we would have to pay for support on this given it fell outside of the scope of our service level. So essentially no-one wanted to take responsibility or assist with this!

Does the forum have any insights into what may be going on here and how we can move this forward?

  • Thanks LiaBrown for the response. I have tried (again) to log with Microsoft support and got a different, but equally poor, response.

I was told to either log it with Azure Support (this is not an Azure issue) or post it on this forum.... 😡

The missing link is the Windows Update publication, not the Dell download page. I would document one affected service tag, current BIOS version, target BIOS version, hardware ID, Intune driver policy name, and Windows Update scan time, then check whether the firmware appears in the Microsoft Update Catalog for that model. If it is not in the catalog, Intune cannot deploy it through Driver Updates no matter how the policy is configured. For security exposure, raise it as a coordinated vendor-publication issue with Dell and Microsoft, and ask specifically whether the firmware has been published to Windows Update for the Dell 5520 hardware IDs you manage.

  • We'd love to give Dell or MS those details but as I said Dell point the finger at MS and MS said to get support we have to pay! So not the best service really from either provider given it's a rather fundamental issue beyond our control.

From what I can see this update is not appearing in the MS Update Catalogue, so you're correct that it will therefore not sync down via autopatch in Intune. Question is, why is the update not in the catalogue? Given that firmware updates for other Dell Latitude models we have are receiving firmware updates, and we have previously received update for this model, I'm little perplexed why it has now stopped for this specific model.

Packaging the update in Intune is not our preferred option due to Bitlocker suspension and the prospect of users in the field ending up with a laptop asking for a recovery key.

The main reason for posting here was to gauge if anyone else out there has a similar issue or if someone from MS is listening maybe they could either explain what's going on or maybe nudge Dell.

  • Intune does not import firmware from Dell’s download page. Driver update policies orchestrate updates through Windows Update and Autopatch; Windows Update determines applicability from device hardware, and the OEM or publisher must publish and classify the update there. On an affected 5520, force a Windows Update scan and confirm Microsoft update endpoints are reachable. In Intune, verify device is assigned to the driver policy, diagnostic data is allowed, and review its driver report. If version 1.51.0 is absent there, no Intune approval can expose it. Give Microsoft and Dell the model, system SKU, current BIOS, target version, policy ID, and report evidence so they can trace the offer metadata. For immediate remediation, package Dell’s signed standalone updater as an Intune Win32 app, use system context and a firmware-version detection rule, then pilot a small group before broad deployment. This avoids installing Dell Command Update while the catalog issue is investigated.
