If the security group is mail enabled, you can send directly.
AFAIK, you cannot do this directly from a SP 2013, you need to use a legacy workflow...SP 2013 workflows in SPO are not able to resolve Security / Office 365 Groups
Confirmed this. We've had to do this several times, and this is the ONLY way to achieve this. A bit of a headache, but it works.
