Azure Virtual Desktop - Black Screens on logins - What we've tried so far
TLDR - Azure Virtual Desktop Black Screens. Could be 2 Min long, could be much longer. Tried removing stuck profiles, spun up all new VMs to see if that would fix it, finally disabled an application service that was polluting the Event logs constantly with appcrashes. Hoping that maybe the event logs weren't able to keep up so we had a black screen while events caught up. Grasping at straws. We started getting reports of black screens when users login to one of our AVD Host Pools. Our users are using FSLogix for profiles, but we've also seen the issue when logging via RDP with a local admin account. We tested and saw similar results where you login, FSLogix Prompt goes by, then to Preparing Windows, then black screen. In a normal login, this black screen will last 10-20 seconds before desktop comes available and user can begin their session. With this issue, we were seeing black screens that just stayed there until you forced a logout of your account. We saw some profile issues with the VMs in the pool appearing to be stuck on a VM when it should be removed upon logoff with FSLogix and we saw some stuck local_username FSLogix profiles still in the users folder. Instead of finding the needle in a haystack, we spun up a new group of VMs and put the others in drain mode / excluded. With the new VMs, logins from RD Client were working fine yesterday afternoon, evening and this AM. But later in the morning, we saw some issues with users getting a black screen lasting 90 sec - 2 min before desktop loaded in. I had it happen to me when logging in, but it seemed to go away once I tried a couple more times. I even directly RDPd into the host that I had the 2 min black screen for me and was able to get in quickly. So issue appears to still be showing, but not as bad. We looked in event logs and saw that one particular application - the Aspen Multicase Web service was polluting the service event logs with appcrash errors every few seconds. So we've disabled that application service on all the VMs in the pool and logins have been normal since. We read event logs that were event 4625 (failed login) but the event said event logs couldn't keep up and needed to stop duplicate events...so we were thinking that this service was constantly writing to event logs, could the slow logins happen when the service is trying to run, failing and writing to event logs. the logs wouldn't be able to write the login info. But every other change we made things seem fine afterward for a while, but then the black screen will come back for at least 90sec - 2 min. Any suggestions on things we can try / look at that could be causing this?
Remote Desktop client connection
I'm trying to expand access to our AVD pools into our internal network and I'm getting the following error after I hit subscribe. I never get the initial Entra sign in when you click subscribe. The network I want to extend to is fairly secured with very limited access to the internet. I've been trying ever looser rule set to access the necessary services but at this point I'm allowing everything out on port 443 from my test machine without change. I was originally trying to connect to private endpoints through an express rout connection but I've removed the DNS forwarding that was directing the traffic there for now as well. The client update also fails and when I dig into the logs I can see that it has a TLS error "System.Net.WebException: The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel."
Photos App not working "Invalid Value For Registry"
I've had this problem reoccur for multiple Azure Virtual Desktop customersthroughout the last years (multi-session Windows 10 and 11). When a user tries to open a .jpeg or any other photo-file, they get an error saying"Invalid Value For Registry". For some reason it cannot open the associated Photos app from Windows. The problem is always fixed by going to the Start Menu and manually opening the Photos app from there. At the first start it looks like the app just got updated. After starting it and closing the app, opening .jpegs etc. works fine. The problem we have is that 'resetting' the Photos app needs to be done for every user, and it seems to reoccur every half year/ year. I am wondering if there are any more permanent solutions to this in the AVD community. We could install a third-party photo viewer to workaround the problem, but we would like to solve it with the built-in photo viewer.
Active OneDrive makes whole environment 'sluggish'
Our client is using AVD for about 5 weeks in 'production' now. It is a smaller company with about 40 users. We have 6 VM's in AVD (D4s_v5) in use at the moment. We have tried D8s_v5 without any improvement. But we see memory and cpu usage at high levels most of the time with OneDrive at the top of the processes. Every server feels sluggish at the moment. Starting Excel takes about 30-40 seconds, Word about the same time. Opening a Word document takes about 20-25 seconds to open and opening folders from the right pane (yes only the right pane) in explorer takes abount 7-15 seconds per folder. All those folders are folders from SharePoint document libraries. It doens't matter if a folder is fully synced with the server or it isn't. We are using FSlogic with profiles stored on azure. I was reading a blog of Christian Brinkhoff about almost the same kind of issues but can't really pinpoint the exact cause or find a solution for this issue. Can you help me out?
AVD - prevent saving user credentials
I'm using Azure Virtual Desktop with the Remote Desktop client on my Windows machine. I want to prevent the password from being saved when I'm logging in to Azure Virtual Desktop. I found this group policy do not allow passwords to be saved in Remote Desktop Connection Client. But this seems not to apply to the new Remote Desktop Client. Is there something similar for the version im using ? The only thing I can think of for now is that I could unsubscribe from the workspaces at the end of the day or reset. But that's notsuitable at all and very inconvenient.
File Explorer is slow when traversing files synced with OneDrive
Hello team, I have this customer who have this AVD deployment in production, they are managing with Nerdio and they recently move their storages to Azure NetApp. Event with this very optimized environment they are facing one specific issue with the OneDrive synced folders. They created this video that explains the issue in details. They also opened a support ticket, but they didn't help with this issue. They are facing that for a while and they are asking for more assistance. If anyone could have any clue would be great! Azure Virtual Desktop - Problems Attempting Locked down Exam Environment
I am attempting to build an Azure Virtual Desktop that will be used for an Exam Environment. The physical workstations are thin clients that auto-direct to RDP and access our AVD environment. Using a Windows11+Office365 image, I created a basic image. I added shortcuts to the desktop (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, a web shortcut) I want a non-persistent desktop that does not pull any information from a user's account. Not OneDrive, not Teams, no roaming files. It will pass-through the user's credentials for obtaining a Office license and nothing more. All internet will be blocked, and only a couple of sites will be accessed. All lockdown settings are handled through GPO (GPO settings File). **not shown in the file is the usage of Teams where I used a fake tenant ID so it was impossible to load\link MSTeams. But to block OneDrive as indicated in the file, I did use the correct tenant ID. Does it work? Yes. But it has issues loading up. When you attempt to sign in, it will take exactly 10min 'Preparing Windows'. Once this completes, in the bottom left corner is a minimized DOS window. When you restore this window it shows it's attempting to run UsrLogon.cmd but has the error"The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator. Press any key to continue...", which when done takes you to the desktop. Lastly, the weblink is created for the student to upload their exam to our CRM when completed. When you access this weblink it opens with "Welcome-new-device is blocked" and you have to use TaskManager to kill Edge, and then restart it so it will then properly access the CRM site. While this does work as intended once you get to this point, it's an unnecessary delay. Especially when attempting to take an exam. I need help trying to identify those (3) problems; - Why is it taking 10 minutes to prepare windows, and how do you make it stop doing that? - Why is the usrlogon.cmd failing to run (and I don't appear to need it, so how to stop it completely?) - What GPO did I miss with Edge to not have that 'welcome new device\user' to appear and just load the website I want.Virtual Channel stop working after reconnect Virtual Desktop due to client power sleep and resume
Hi, I am using Remote Desktop client for Windows (1.2.5800.0 x64 msi) toconnect toWindows 365Virtual Desktop to test a custom Virtual channel plugin, it works good on normal connection, able to read/write betweenclient andVirtual Desktop, but itstop working after reconnect Virtual Desktop due to client power sleep and resume.Virtual channel plugin get aCHANNEL_EVENT_TERMINATED event and never come back. Anyone has similar issue?
