Word won't open on mac
Hi,
For the last couple of days, the word app on my mac won't open. It bounces after clicking in the icon and then nothing happens. I have to force the app to shut down. All the other office apps are working fine. I downloaded the latest version of Mac OS. What should I do to fix this?

What version of Office are you using? Office 365? Office 2016? Or Office 2011 for Mac?

I upgraded mac to high sierra 10.13.5 and now Word will not open. All other office products open. Word just bounces and nothing happens.

Hi I have a brand new Macbook Pro with the MacOs Mojave 10.14.5
I installed a fresh Office 2019 and all aplications work except Word.
When I try to open Word the icon bounces but do not open. I tried to reinstall the Office aplication but the problem persists.
Word version is 16.26

MS Office 365 on Mac. Updated mac to high sierra 10.13.5 and word will not open. excel and powerpoint and outlook all open.

It opens on all of my devices except my MacBook. I have everything on the cloud and waited for it to finish loading. Everything seems to work except my Office 365 through MCC. I tried running disk utility repair. No problems there. I am using High Sierra.

Hi Julie,
Are you trying to open a document or running word from the applications folder?
It would be good to test both if you have not already.
can you advise how you are starting Word?
If you are starting from shortcut on desktop ... Try moving to trash and start from app's folder.
Hope this helps you out, please provide as much information as you can for what you have tried. For example, how, what happened, error messages.

I have tried all options - even clicking on word document from Finder.
Excell and Powerpoint work fine.

I've tried opening word from documents, from the application folder, the dock shortcut. nothing works. As I said, I don't get any response whatsoever. No error message.

It sounds like you need to repair the installation. This is a separate process on PCs, but on the Mac...
In Excel, go to Help menu and Check for Updates. This should rebuild the installation.

I get what Julie gets when clicking app icons: bouncing icons and then they die. But when clicking on files, the associated app (i.e. Word for .doc files) does open.

So it must be a template issue because the template screen is what is supposed to load when you launch an Office app from its icon.

Hi Julie,
This is a persistent problem for me too. No matter what updates I make, I have trouble getting Word and Excel to open. It takes a good hour to get them running sometimes. It's been going on for half a year now, and I can't find a solution besides never buying a mac ever again.

Fix= Before opening Any Office program:
1 Turn off wifi
2. Open Office program
3. turn wifi back on.
It's the only thing that's worked for me. Now my chrome is doing the same thing, nd this fix works for that as well.

Savannah Bartel I bought a copy of MS Word about 10 years ago. It's been working fine on the few occasions I need to use it. I upgraded to Big Sur recently and now am totally unable to launch MS Word.
Any suggestions?
I tried several of the suggestions to an earlier comment and nothing worked.
I will try to attach a copy of the error message I receive. I tried clicking on "Restore..." and it does not work. It wants me to use Word 365 which is a total waste of money for me.

Hi Rochel. My Mac is not connected to a fixed line and not the Wifi. It will be a pain to disconnect it every time I have to open an office app but will try that. Problem is that this happens intermittently. Where are the brains trust of Microsoft and Mac. There are over 2000 views of the original post

Oh my, yes I can see that would be annoying. It seems they've dropped the ball on this one. I've had this issue for months and clearly lots of other people as well. I saw in another thread that the new update should've included a fix, but after updating, I was sadly disappointed.

Turning Wifi off before opening Word did solve the problem for me, and now I'll try to figure out what the real issue is. Thank you!

I had this problem with powerpoint so I reinstalled 365, then every office app wouldn't open unless I opened a file. I spent hours on searching for the answer and found this worked:
I opened word with a file (opened a word document I had saved)
Clicked on Word then preferences
then general
then unclicked the check on show document gallery when opening word
It fixed the issue for me.
I tried this with wifi off, but it may work either way. Hope that helps.

I had the same problem, what I did was the following and I was able to solve
1- Uninstall the office for mac as follows https://support.office.com/es-es/article/desinstalar-office-para-mac-eefa1199-5b58-43af-8a3d-b73dc1a8cae3
2- Download and install the Mac OS Mojave operating system again
and with those two steps I was able to reopen the microsoft programs- Rakesh HarribhaiCopper Contributor

if you uninstall the office with the link that I shared and reinstall Sierra to see if that works for you

turn off your wifi
open word
click Word tab
open "preferences"
open 'general'
deselect 'update automatic links at opening'
close word
turn on your wifi
open word
That should have fixed it.
