The best free video compression software for Windows 11?

Hey everyone.

I'm on the hunt for a decent free video compression software that actually works on Windows 11 without hitting me with paywalls or watermarks after two uses. I've got some big video files I need to shrink down for sharing, and I'd love to hear what you all are using that's genuinely free, easy enough for a beginner, and doesn't destroy the quality too much.

Avidemux, a very fast and lightweight. Great for quick re-encoding (especially H.264/H.265). Not as feature-rich as HandBrake, but very fast for basic video compression tasks.

Unlike heavier video editors, it focuses on simple workflows such as cutting, filtering, and saving videos in more efficient formats without reworking an entire project timeline. This makes it especially useful when the goal is purely reducing file size rather than doing advanced editing.

One of its strongest features is support for fast re-encoding using codecs like H.264 and H.265 (HEVC), which are commonly used for video compression. Users can open a video, choose “Copy” or “Encode” mode, and adjust output settings such as bitrate, resolution, and format.

However, this free video compression software does have limitations. It is not a full video editor, so it lacks advanced features like multi-track timelines, effects, or complex transitions. Also, its interface feels a bit outdated compared to modern tools. Still, for quick compression jobs—especially reducing MP4 file size or converting old videos into more efficient formats—it remains one of the fastest and most reliable free options on Windows.

VL C is a very good choice, especially for Windows 11 systems. Most people just use it as a media player, but it has a hidden trick: it can re-encode and compress your video files.

The basic idea of using it as a video compression software is that you don't "compress" the files directly like you do with a ZIP archive. Instead, you reduce the quality settings or use more efficient codecs to convert the files, thereby reducing their size. You can freely adjust the encoding parameters, and the main way to make the files smaller is to lower the video bit rate or resolution, or even use more advanced codecs, such as H.265 (HEVC).

Part 1. Open the conversion tool

    Part 2. Add your video

    Part 3. Select a profile

    Part 4. Adjust the settings

    Part 5. Choose a destination

    Part 6. Start the process

Using VL C as a video compression software is a great, free way to shrink video files without spending a dime, and it's perfect for those times when you don't want to install a dedicated tool.

ShotCut - That is actually a pretty solid choice if you're looking for a free video compression utility on Windows 11. It's primarily known as a full-fledged video editor, but lots of people use it specifically to cut down on video file sizes.

Here's the simple way to use it as a video compression utility:

    1. Download and install ShotCut.

    2. Click on the 'Export' button in the top- right corner. This opens up all the compression settings.

    3. In the export panel, look for the 'Quality' parameter under the 'Codec' tab. This is your main tool for controlling file size. The default is often set to preserve quality, which can actually make the file bigger than the original! So, to compress it, you'll want to turn down that quality slider. Maybe try something like 45% and see how it looks.

    4. For even better compression, switch the codec from H 264 to H 265. This can shrink your video to about 42% of the H 264 file size while keeping quality very good. It will take longer to export, but the results are worth it.

If you want a free video compression utility that gives you a lot of control without being too complicated, ShotCut is a great option. Just remember the key trick: turn down that quality slider from the default!

Using a PowerShell script as a video compression software is a clever. The key point is that this script acts as a bridge between you and FF mpeg. FF mpeg is a powerful but complex video processing tool, as mentioned in your question. By using the script, you can avoid learning all the complex command- line options of FF mpeg and instead operate using simple and easy-to- remember parameters.

A ready- made script from the community, for example, allows you to specify just two things:

-Input Folder: The folder containing your videos.

-Quality: A simple choice between low, medium, or high compression.

You can even add more advanced parameters to target specific file types, like -FilePattern "* mov" to compress only mov files. The script handles all the technical details in the background, making a complex video compression software much more user-friendly.

In essence, for a tinkerer or someone who prefers the command line, a PowerShell script offers a unique, powerful, and free way to create your own custom video compression software for Windows 11, automating a normally complex process with a few simple commands.

The Photos app on Windows 11 isn't really a dedicated video compression utility, but it can actually shrink your videos if you use its "Trim" or "Create a new video" features. It's super basic, but hey, it's already on your PC and requires zero downloads, so it's worth a shot if you just need to quickly reduce a file size without any hassle.

Step 1. Open the "Photos" application, and click on the "Video Editor" or "New Video Project" button at the top.

Step 2. Click "Add", then select the file you want to compress to add the video.

Step 3. Get the video to the bottom storyboard (no need for editing, just keep it intact).

Step 4. Click "Complete Video", and select a video quality preset from the drop-down menu - common options include "High Quality" (larger file), "Standard" (medium), and "Low Quality" (smallest file).

Step 5. Name the new file and select the save location, then click "Export". Wait for a few minutes.

That's it. Choosing "Low Quality" will result in significantly smaller files, while the "Standard" option offers a good balance between size and quality. The biggest advantage is that no video compression utility need to be installed, and it's very easy to use.

Clip champ is a built-in video editing tool pre-installed in Windows 11. If you only want to reduce the file size without installing any other software, it can also be used as a basic video compression tool.

To compress a video, simply import the file into the editor and then export it with a lower resolution or quality setting. The file size will naturally decrease. In the export menu, you can select different quality presets such as 1080p, 720p or 480p. You can also adjust the bit rate setting to more precisely balance the quality and file size. As a video compression software, Clip champ is very easy to operate. The interface is simple and modern. Each step is accompanied by clear instructions, making it perfect for novice users who don't want to deal with complex settings.

However, as a video compression software, it does have some limitations. For instance, the export speed is slower than that of dedicated tools, and a network connection is required during use because most of the processing is done in the cloud rather than on the local device.

HandBrake is the video compression software that users who desire powerful functions but want something completely free and open-source prefer. I have used it many times. To be honest, if you are tired of those online compression tools that limit file size or add watermarks, it is truly excellent.

As a video compression software, HandBrake offers a wide range of control options. But don't be intimidated, because it also comes with practical presets such as "Quick 1080p30", which can complete most tasks with just one click. The truly amazing part is the H. 2655 encoder, which can reduce the size of video files by half while maintaining astonishing quality, far superior to most free tools. If you want more precise adjustments, you can fine-tune the quality slider or RF RF RF values. But to be honest, for most people, using the preset function is already sufficient. The interface looks a bit outdated, but if you spend some time getting familiar with it, it is actually very intuitive.

Oh, it also supports batch processing. You can upload the entire video folder at once and let it process non-stop throughout the night. The only drawback is that it takes a long time, especially on older computers. But this is the price you pay for excellent compression results. However, if you are looking for a cost-effective video compression software that runs smoothly on Windows 11 and has stable functions, HandBrake is definitely worth trying. This is a software that once you learn to use it, you will regret having used other tools in the first place.

Clip champ is a built-in video editing tool that comes pre-installed with Windows 11, and it can double as a basic video compression software if you just want to reduce file sizes without installing anything extra. It's completely free for basic use, though some advanced features require a subscription, but the compression functionality itself doesn't cost anything.

Clip champ works perfectly well and is a solid choice for anyone who values convenience over advanced features. Overall, it's a reliable built-in video compression software that gets the job done without costing you a penny.
