The best free video compression software for Windows 11?
Avidemux, a very fast and lightweight. Great for quick re-encoding (especially H.264/H.265). Not as feature-rich as HandBrake, but very fast for basic video compression tasks.
Unlike heavier video editors, it focuses on simple workflows such as cutting, filtering, and saving videos in more efficient formats without reworking an entire project timeline. This makes it especially useful when the goal is purely reducing file size rather than doing advanced editing.
One of its strongest features is support for fast re-encoding using codecs like H.264 and H.265 (HEVC), which are commonly used for video compression. Users can open a video, choose “Copy” or “Encode” mode, and adjust output settings such as bitrate, resolution, and format.
However, this free video compression software does have limitations. It is not a full video editor, so it lacks advanced features like multi-track timelines, effects, or complex transitions. Also, its interface feels a bit outdated compared to modern tools. Still, for quick compression jobs—especially reducing MP4 file size or converting old videos into more efficient formats—it remains one of the fastest and most reliable free options on Windows.
